Making my own picks
« on: March 24, 2012, 02:47:44 pm »

I am embarking on a glacier, and want to make my own picks instead of paying 44 for each.

any tips? possible problems?

i am taking:
9xnative copper
50xbitominous coal

and i need a stone for the forges now, but i want to use that stone for something useful later too, so i thought about gypsum, but i am not sure if it is firesafe or not

Bring at least one refined coal (coal or charcoal, not bituminous coal); you can't make more refined coal without that first one until you get to magma (except through wood burning; you can bring an extra stone and an extra wood if you do it that way). Bring an anvil, because you can't make a forge without an anvil. Bring several stone because you'll need several workshops.

Gypsum isn't fire-safe-- need to be solid at 11000 U to be fire-safe.

You'll need a piece of wood (charcoal) to make your first piece of coke.  No wood on glaciers.  On preview, what uncool said.

You'll need a fire-safe material for your wood furnace, your smelter, and your forge.  If you don't intend to use all three at the same time, you can use the same piece of stone for all three.

I'm assuming you're aware of the various difficulties involved in embarking on a glacier-- water being foremost among them, in my opinion.

I'll make it easier for you.

1x copper bar
2xcoal

OR

n copper bar
n x2 logs
1/2 firesafe stones.

Make your own charcoal, much cheaper than buying coal from embark

Gypsum is not firesafe, nor can it be used as a building material. The only thing it's good for is plaster for casts.

Don't forget that you can't burn bituminous coal directly, you have to smelt it into coke at your smelter first, and that requires burnable fuel. So bring one unit of coke to begin smelting your coal (and, since you have no trees for charcoal, don't ever run out of coke). Alternatively, bring an extra stone to build a wood furnace, then deconstruct your wagon and burn one of the three component logs.

Don't forget that your forge also requires a fire-safe stone.

thx for the quick answer. I was worried about not being able to use the bituminous coal right from the start.

Now the big question is, which stone to bring? since gypsum don't work and i don't want a colorful fortress(so most of my stuff will be made of the first stone layer), then the stone i bring must something with a use after it makes the picks.

You could use one of the ores (which you can later smelt), or you could use obsidian (which you can make into sharp blades). Both make it more expensive; I've always found that just having magma-safe stone is always a good thing, and it frees up more buying space. If you're on a glacier, you're going to be doing a lot of magma work, and for that you'll need magma-safe stone to make mechanisms and floodgates and the like.

Other useful stones are listed under "economic stones"; they are either ores, flux (used in the production of steel), obsidian, or fuel.

I always just used Granite - it's magma safe, and it only costs 3 points.

Err. Granite is not magma-safe. Might you be talking about gabbro?

I guess i will bring Kaolinite then. And make some porcelain pots after the picks are ready and are magma safe and cost only 3 to bring like any other stone.

thx for the tips

Issue was firesafe, not magmasafe. Granite is perfectly suited for a furnace or a forge.
