Hopefully when the trade economy kicks in, sone if these high effort crafts will end up being worth more.

Hives can be placed adjecent to an outdoor tile, so making a tower with each level being 3x3 can solve any security issues about hive farming.

It can be expanded by putting open spaces in the tower and surrounding it by 8 hives.

Or even better just channeling down a 1x1 space into the earth as far deep as you want it and in each z-level 8 hives can be placed around the open space. 80 hives for 10 z-levels, and 800 hives for 100 z-levels.

That doesn't solve the security issue. One word. Flyers.

EDIT: although, it would be funny to see "the dragon has been stung by a honey bee" x100 while he flies down a bee tower. Your fort would then crumble to it's end, as your dwarves are trying to haul 100 !!bee remains!! to your refuse stockpile

How about a hole in the ground with a floor grate over it?

Clowns, cave dragons and megabeasts. 'Nuff said.

I placed my hives under roof without outdoor access and it worked perfectly. All tiles near hives have been marked as aboveground, light, inside. Might be a bug.

Beekeeping is a poo industry and not really worth the hassle of running it. It's something to muck around with once you've got your fort well established. Some dwarves like mead, so making mead makes them happier.

Most of it are not worth it. If mead was more valuable it would though.

Oh but it is worth it. One day, you will have an outstanding fortress; efficient in the production of meat, leather, crops, obsidian, anything. You're so proud of your defences and your wealth that you'll just have to show it to us on the forums... but then you see someone else with a fortress of similar strength, only they've got bees. And you don't.

Bees make everything better. And a single legendary beekeeper tending to BILLIONS of bees is a beautiful sight indeed.

Without bees how could you possibly build a bee-powered robot?
