I abandoned... Played around with a few other sights and then got fustrated thinking I could figure out a way to wall it off and pump out the water....

Basically I thought I could just build a hole and a tunnel underneath it to build a well... But low and behold it poured through it and filled the fort. I'm trying to drop a block right there but I can't seem to figure out how to do it.

Here is the image of the spot I am trying to drop. I guess I need to channel above it but how do I drop a block in it without channeling around it.

How does one drop blocks in the first place. Once that is done I need to figure out a way to pump out the water. I guess I could just build a pump above and pump it straight into the river.

Any advice on this? I'm totally helpless.

You need a wall of natural stone to "drop a block". As that looks like a surface river, I don't think that's possible.

You've a bunch of options, but easiest I can think of would be using your old fort as your new water reservoir, and carve a new fort.



Next time, install floodgates before working with any infinite water sources.

Pump up some magma and obsidianise the tiles you need filled.

So I accidentally flooded my fortress...

Yep, everything seems normal around here.

But yeah, looking at the lay of the land, it would be super hard if not impossible to drop the required block there. Your best bet would be.. I dunno, two pumps, one to pump the river water back at the river, and the other to pump the water already in your fort back into your fort [another hole or four would have to be dug.]

With a small section of that hallway constantly being pumped [maybe 3 blocks apart, send a dwarf down [brave motherfucker.] to build a wall, and hopefully with the two pumps constantly going he'll be able to complete the job. Then you can dismantle the pumps, build on atop the wall to begin pumping the water in your base back into the river.

Keep in mind I have no idea if this will work, but it SOUNDS like it will.

Dig a seperate hole from the surface to the lowest level of your fort. dig out a large pathway one tile from the edge of your fort to the edge of the map. smooth and carve fortifications into the edge of the map. When you are ready, mine through the wall tile holding back the water to let it drain out. If the Fort is full of water, the water will be pressurized, and the miner will likely drown. you may want to channel it from above. water won't rise if it can expand horizontally.

Oh my, that takes me back.... It's been a long time since I flooded my fort. I should start experimenting with drowning traps and pumpstacks.

Oh, and waterwheels take more energy now. Dwarven reactors need to be bigger.

I pierced Aquifers with this method .. Pumps can pump out the water faster than it flows in so as long as you keep pumping you can create a dry spot to build a wall.

Good news everyone. An area I had channeled out turned to ice in the winter so I was able to build a wall. The bad news is that everyone died of thirst in the process because all the water was either frozen (above ground) or polluted (underground). Now I just have to pump the water out I guess.

I have a question though regarding the frozen water. If I build floors and wall over the current river will it prevent it from freezing?

If not, I was thinking of building a cistern.

Since I've never messed with pumps before how can I build a 1 level z up cistern for clean water?

Can I build it like this (~ water, F floor, w wall):

How would the dwarf get to the pump without getting into the water? Do they pump from above or would I need to make it channeled on the other side?

Good thing for freezing temperatures lol. I probably would have attempted building a channel near the opening out to the far side for a good bit, then dig a staircase all the way down to the first cavern layer. Then let loose the water and hope the water level near where you need to plug your fort away from the river is low enough to do so.

As far as I know, tiles with water on it need to not be "above ground" for it not to freeze.

Water pumps can be powered using watermills/windmills and the proper connectors. So you'd construct the pump, hook it up to said watermill/windmill, and hook up one point (like a gear assembly) to a lever so you can turn it on or off elsewhere so your dwarf doesn't drown.

I wonder if he could moses effect the river for a while, long enough to drain his fort back into the river. If he hooked the system up to a powersource he could keep it going without breaks.
