So, I'll start us off. After many unsuccessful attempts, i managed to get a fort up and running smoothly (low pop cap helped alot) but i soon found out the problem of a low population. just as the long awaited caravan was coming for my third year, goblins ambush it, so i send my squad out to help, but while they were out after the goblins, a forgotton beast, (which i had thought i had sealed into part of the cavern away from my dwarves) breaks into the fortress. A dwarf child and and my legendary engraver are ripped to pieces just before my squad arrives, and in the epic battle with the gemmed beast, my commander of militia gets killed, thrown halfway across my fortress just before the final stab from a speardwarf kills the beast. Then a snatcher grabbed another child and made off with it. :( so lots of bad one after another, and with only a total of 16 dwarves in my fort, its not easy to lose a few >.< as a result, i raised my pop cap a bit more. hopefully one migrant wave will bring enough to build myself a more robust army then the simple spear and hammerer combo i have. On the plus side, most of the caravan went nuts and all the wagons were destroyed, so i now have tons of goods to both trade, as well as lots of weapons, armor, trap parts, and metal odds and ends to make more of the above!

Raising the pop cap to get above 16 dorfs? Thats far from an "up and running fort. a good fort in my opinion is 100 or over.

edit; Anyway, on topic, having all the stuff from the caravan kindof ruins the fun of getting it, unless they were elves, there worth double points.

haha, yeah, and the stuff is honestly more of an annoyance then a bonus. tons of stuff im NEVER going to use, but now im too worried i might need it later to melt it. but what i had been going for with a low pop cap is to not be swamped with migrants right at the start. and ive got plans for the elven caravans.... To be honest though, it wasnt my fault that the entire caravan died. xD in reality, only like one actualy got KILLED by the goblins, the rest just went bonkers and got killed by their own guards. all the junk they had left stacked on the ground was starting to kill my framerate though, so i gathered it all up and magma-dumped the trash or atom smashed it. still working through it. i dont even KNOW whats in half these barrels! i had to stop food production because it says ive an absolutely absurd amount of food and booze now xD

I just had an EPIC fail today with my human fort. I didn't realize there was an opening into my stronghold via the dry moat being connected to my storeroom. I found out when I made said moat wet by piercing the river. Initially I tried to wall off the breach or mitigate the damage, but I eventually resigned myself to getting as many supplies ou as possible. Now, I'd breached the caverns, so everything down there is flooding.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

Good- i now have autonomous system whereby my dwarves make every alcohol type including above ground and below grown drinks, tok a lot of micro managing but now no one can complain about drinking the same old booze

Bad- i have to slaughter 50 migrants every season, you would think walking past the corpses of thousands of other would be migrants, on a iron road stained red with blood would make them turn around, its annoying micromanaging the killing.

Fun- got a FB that used webs, everything below -10z levels is now dead.

Ouch, thats harsh! At least my forgotten beast was only made of a really weak gem and its only abillity was that it spat frozen chunks of something at my guys (who all easily batted it away with their shields)

Good: Got underhive settelment thriving off meat and water. Haven't mastered brewing in this mod yet.

Bad: Giant Wolf Spiders. EVERYWHERE. killed a fishery worker by biting a hole in her head, and all my dogs. So vermin is now a major issue.

The FUN: MORE GODDAMN SPIDERS

...that was basically all I wanted to say.

;D spot on. I love it when people recognize it. not often that i get people who do. x]

on other news, the good is i now have a well drafted army, equiped with all the goodies i got from caravants that got ambushed on their way to me, as well as lots of iron being smelted. im well on my way to building a splendid fortress.! i even have a couple catapults set up overlooking the entry path, to cause lots of pain to any invaders (when they eventualy start coming. still none yet. whats the value that triggers a seige again? (actualy, ill just pick a fight with the elves. more fun, even if i am just gona sacrifice all their stuff to the lava pipe x])

the bad is that when i collected all the caravans stuff, i end up with alot of junk. still sorting out barrels of ichor and blood from wine and food. x]

the FUN is... well i had a marksdwarf die, but thats about it, atm. ive got ample supplies, thriving above and belowground farms, and even a bit of a metal industry dispite the lack of any real ores in the area so far. Oh, and ghosts. i keep forgetting to burry dead merchants and their ghosts cause havoc until a dwarf drags their bodies back into a coffin.

If you REALLY need to get rid of migants just diable everything but hauling labors, put them in a marksdwarf squad and set to 5-8 training while the rest haul. Let them shoot up prisoners in the arena or help in a siege to get that 1st rank and there ya go.
