Hidden arm sword
« on: March 23, 2012, 08:54:06 pm »

A couple of weeks ago my computer broke and whilst waiting for parts I decided to make a hidden arm sword (like the hidden blade in assasin's creed). I was wondering if anyone had ideas for a locking mechanism?

Here's a video of what I made so far:

No ideas on a locking mechanism, but that is pretty cool.

If you're in Canada I suggest that you stop making it for legal reasons (spring release blades are illegal in Canada).

Otherwise, you will want a switch that activates when you have your hand away from the opening (lever release maybe?). You'll also want multiple springs to deliver force more evenly as well as a metal catch to hold the blade in place when you apply pressure. There are many different lock releasing mechanisms, and depending on what you pick it might be less prone to failure (releasing early), but harder to close (hand operated pulley system? It can be done mechanically, which I recommend, but it depends on your skills).

If you want a blade in there, go for something short. It's less likely to break and you'll have more room to work with mechanisms. I would also go for something less prone to failure if you want to go this route, just because not everyone wants to lose a finger or two.

1. It's also illegal to make this in Australia - concealed weapons and spring loaded weapons are both against the law.

2. Springs would work but you of course run the risk of injuring yourself if you accidentally trigger it.

3. Funfact: I'm not legally allowed to walk around with my cane because it's considered a club as I don't use it as a walking aid.

Bwahahaha, awesome. I can't think of any locking mechanism that wouldn't be too delicate to actually make, though.

He sounds English.

I imagine it's technically illegal in most countries but as long as he's not using it on people he'll be fine.

I am indeed English. The "sword" isn't sharp or anything, so I doubt you could call it a weapon.

I'd change that to "carrying it in public" or "being under police investigation".

If you just keep it around your own house and don't get in any trouble with the police, I doubt anyone would care. Be sure to exercise caution, though: Don't turn it into a weapon, and if the police get interested let them know it's just an experimental model, and just a toy, like a Nerf gun. Having an Ezio costume to go along with it would make them want to have even less reason to suspect you're a hardcore bad guy.

I doubt anyone in any country would have problems with just a prop (not an actual sharp blade) like a plastic toy or whatever. And of course, not going around in the streets trying to scare cops with it.

Unless you have laws against toy swords?

Yeah. If it's illegal to have a spring loaded dagger/sword, just have a placeholder. It isn't illegal to make a spring-loaded box that extends a dull object. I haven't made something like that before, but I have looked into it in the past.
