I do. I don't like being reminded of the McCarthy era witchunts every time I pull out my money, thank you very much. I'm a bit of a traditionalist, and the sooner we do away with this modern insult, even if its only intended to be directed at Russia, in favour of returning to our traditional motto, the better.

See, for some reason, I can't help be see this as another piece of ammunition for dreaded FAR RIGHT to wage a literal war against atheists. And this one over something very anal.

If you keep picking at that, it's never going to heal.

I don't see how this is a big deal. The motto has been there for years, making it kind of a natural identifier for other countries, and even if they do change it, then what?

It's going to anger a few religious people, make controversies, all just to change a few letters and words.

I'm not against changing the motto though, although I don't see it likely to happen if some other people (read: religious) are possibly going to be making noises and whine about it.

Yeah, pretty much my position on it as well. It's on the periphery of issues regarding the Religious Right and currently they have enough power to shut down any possibility of it. Atm its merits or flaws are more a matter of intellectual consideration than something to make a political reality.

I'd love to see it removed, honestly, but I know it won't happen for a long time.

But the U.S. is a secular nation, damn it. And "In God we Trust" is a Christian statement. It should not be the nation's motto.

"In God we Trust" is a Christian statement.
Technically just a religious statement, but that is beside the point.
I will agree with you, but what would we replace it with?

It does not say “a god”; it says “God”. It is a captialized proper noun, so it seems to me that it refers to the Judeo-Christian god, unless there is another monotheistic religion that does that.

Removing it would make a few people happy, but offend many more.

So you understand why it is so important that we do it.

I can just imagine the Fox News story if this actually happened.

Everyone knows exactly which God they're referring to on the dollar, and pretending otherwise is being intentionally obtuse.

We should replace it with (what I still consider to be) the real motto of the United States, E Pluribus Unum, which in my opinion has always been the best representation of what the Union should ideally stand for.

And I should point out that the Constitution is quite clear that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion". And this is pretty clearly establishing religion within a government function, in this case the manufacture of legal currency.

More then one religion believes it that particular god, my apologies for being vague.
But again, it's beside the point.

Better than "E Pluribus, Unum", is "E Patria Securitas, Odium", because that's what your country has become.

No offence to the people, just the policy.

I really don't know why people even care almost either way. (I know why the Senate might care. Changing money is actually an undertaking and costs a lot of money to do)

"I can't help but think this Civil Rights Bill will be just another piece of ammunition for the dreaded FAR RIGHT to wage a literal war against black people".

...No, I don't get what you're saying, unless you're telling me that you should avoid change because some vaguely defined group of people might react violently to it.

If I were a conservative strategist it would be no effort whatsoever to coin something about "We're in the middle of a deficit and the Left wants to put us further into debt to take the only thing keeping our money afloat off of our money!" Almost a turkey shoot right there.

Pre-edit:

@Leafsnail: I have been accused of stretching people arguments to their very extreme and making fun of them before, so I probably deserve this. On the other hand, I was simply giving a realistic idea of what was going to happen for people to consider, not discourage them from doing it. I am in no way thoroughly invested in what I am saying, I'm just playing through what I believe is likely to happen on this page. I like thinking about scenarios, and I like showing people what I think will happen.

Like I am doing in my pre-edit.

And yes, I might not have phrased it that way, but please, for the love of Darwin, don't make me out to seem like I actually care what the US does to its money. I live in a country where we don't have to deal with this at all.

I have come here thinking it was a silly idea, another attempt to simply erase religion from public view because the mere sight of it might be offensive to someone, and then this thread changed my mind. First time it ever happens to me on the internet, heh.

I still think it's not worth the effort though.
