[The Dog Delusion]

So I've been playing this game for a while, but only recently picked up the newest release to play around with. In something like the 6th year or so of my fort, as Spring rolled around, I got a message to the effect of "Urist mcdwarf, Engineer has died of old age."

I've never seen this happen before in the game, and I'm not sure whether this is:

1) a new addition to the game
2) something that's always been part of the game that I just hadn't encountered
3) the result of me fooling around with the raws



In other news, I fooled around with the raws to (hopefully) remove skill rust from the game. Does that still work?

It has always been possible, but in previous versions dwarves were randomly generated when they immigrated, and were generated with ages that meant they'd take 50+ years to die of old age after immigrating.  Few fortresses last that long.  Now that immigrants can be drawn from historical populations, it's possible to get a dwarf who's old enough to die of old age a few years after immigrating.

One of my brewers died of old age, so it's possible.

Yes, this was always a feature (as far as i can remember back). I'm playing in a 300 years old world, and most of my migrants are on the brink of death. (they are older than 140) The other half of the fort is newly married couples, around the age of 30.
If you play a dead civilization, or one that is on the losing side of a massive war, then you won't have many historical figures, and you will get the randomly generated dwarfs.

Can this cause unhappy thoughts, and therefore tantrum spirals? Or perhaps they cause happy thoughts?

Considering how medieval our fortresses tend to be, dieing of old age should create a happy thought.

The fact that a dwarf child honestly asks why Urist McGrandpa didn't wake up, despite having been in perfect health is a testament to how GRIMDARK the world of DF is.

I yearn to see the day where somebody makes a fort where a child is born in the fort and stays alive in it long enough to die of old age.

It's definitely a negative thought.

And dwarven women don't suffer from menopause.  Had an elderly female dwarf pass away due to old age, it was a minor ding to her husband and her permabulating children in the fort, but she'd given birth just 8 months previously.

The suddenly released, to crawl through the fort, baby, was very unhappy due to the death of a loved one and witnessing death.  Unfortunately, he didn't make it to childhood to go get something to eat or drink, so he dehydrated and died.  Another ding on his dad and siblings who ignored him.  Not much due to the amazing food, dining room, and the lovely mist from the water falls.

Raising a child from baby to death. That means your fort has lived from 150-170 years.

Yep.  Because A-hole nobles naturally cause their chambers to fill with magma
