Originally there was a post here. I got rid of it because I think it was offensive.

The point of that post was to complain about the thread talking about Martin and not Mali, but now I decided the best thing to do is to create a new thread dedicated solely to the Mali coup.

It's much easier to identify emotionally with a single death, yes. Also, in the US Trayvon's killing is about 80x more highly publicized than the Mali coup. That is just how people are.

ed: Yes, I think that's for the best.

The thing is it's not entirely about the tragedy of one death.  It's about a law that could allow this to happen again and again and again, with members of minorities traditionally thought of as "untrustworthy" in the firing line.  It's also something that can actually be addressed (by getting the law struck down or at least getting authorities to investigate in this case) and which could actually be affected by public opinion (EDIT: the public opinion of us, the coup could obviously be affected by the public opinion of those in Mali).

Not to mention that the majority of Americans really don't care about Mali. Hell I'm one of the more worldly aware Americans out there and I still care verylittle about Mali, only really how it impacts the strategic considerations in North Africa (for a second I was gunna write N.A. but then I realized that N.A. can also stand for North America :P) and American interests in that region.

The polls up because it would take me hours to do both, but I have enough time to do one or the other. Alternatively you guys can post summaries of the articles you read or have been posted, so i can copy them into the OP, credit you, and then still be able to expand on the existing topic summaries.

Turns out its not really the fault of the Stand Your Ground law.

Or of the dead kid being black.

Nope, this has turned into something much much similar.

See, it turns out this is actually the fourth time Zimmerman has been arrested, the third for a serious offense worthy of prison time, and second for a felony.

All of those arrests were closed without further investigation, despite the fact that one of them was violent assault on a police officer.

This isn't the case of the police protecting their own, either.

It turns out... Zimmerman's daddy is an important local judge.

Wow, that would be big, you got a link?

I'm watching, right now on MSNBC, a video with Zimmerman coming into the Police station he has NO BLOOD ON HIS HEAD AND LOOKS FINE! This means there was no fight between Trayvon and Zimmerman, which means this was categorically MURDER, as if we didn't know that already. Thank god for police leaks!

Don't got a link for this because it is on live TV now and I don't think there would be links right now, will find later.

As Biden woudl say this is a big fucking deal.

I don't think even having an important judge as your father would be enough for murder if there weren't a law legally justifying murder in some ill defined cases, though.

Finally a "leak" from the Sanford PD that actually makes sense.

ABC News has released a video from the garage of the Sanford precinct, showing Zimmerman being questioned the night of the shooting.  Prior police "leaks" and his attorney and friends have stated that Zimmerman had been bleeding from the nose and back of his head, and when he was picked up, his clothes were wet as if he had been laying on the ground (the forebear to the "Martin turned and violently confronted him" postulation).  You can judge for yourself what he looked like in the video.

Likewise, the filed police report of the night supposedly says they had Trayvon Martin's full name, phone number, listed address, and contact information (after they gathered his property at the scene), yet the PD has insisted Martin was treated as a "John Doe" victim for three days.  Only one of those claims can be real, and it's worth remembering that his parents were not notified by the county coroner for three days.

AS there is a Mali only thread now I will change the name of this thread and encourage others to move to the new one. Trayvon Martin is much more interesting to me personally and thre is new breaking news, will be moving the ABC link to front page.

Are you sure that's Zimmerman in the video? Supposedly Zimmerman wasn't arrested, but the guy in the video obviously has his handds cuffed behind his back.

He wasn't charged, and by extension wasn't held.  Needless to say, there's been a lot of erroneous information flying around since this story started, and I had only heard it before that the police had questioned Zimmerman at his house, and not brought him into the station.  Apparently, that was incorrect.  That is Zimmerman though, or there's going to be a lot of embarrassed newsmen tomorrow.

What I find interesting about it, is how casually the police treat a man they've just brought to the station for possible murder.  Although handcuffed, he free strolls around, the police very casually pat him down and wipe off his jacket, and seem to be holding a conversation at points.  I've been arrested before, and for considerably less substantial suspicions.  That is fucking amazing to me.

Also, don't forget (again) that you can change the title of the thread.

OP, you should change the description to say the LINK to the video was provided by Aqizzar. I thought Aqizzar actually SHOT the video until I checked this page of the thread.

Thats the place most mentions I've found eventually go back to. Though it actually turns out all three events were associated with the same arrest.
