No one should get to rewrite the murder laws. If you try, we will stop you. I've commented on the traditional self defense laws in the US before. There was a REASON there was a duty to retreat; it wasn't just something someone pulled out of thin air.

Quite frankly, I'd turn myself in if I were Zimmerman. Sooner or later someone is going to rip him apart with their bare hands if he doesn't.

It's about goddamn time. When I heard he'd fled the state I was starting to question if Florida even has cops for something other than black crime.

Whether or not he's at fault for the killing, he's basically gotten complete freedom to move and act while being part of a homicide investigation. He could have been outside of the US for weeks by now, for all anyone knows.

Yes. This.

Usually, you get arrested and assessed for bail potential (formerly ROR now CSR). He got a free pass, which was total bullshit.

Legally I have no idea, but morally? Definitely.

I dunno, even if I think Zimmerman is any arbitrary mix of horrible things, I don't think an extra-judicial murder is the moral high ground.

But don't you see one of the fundamental problems for justice in this case, abstract and beaten down concept that it now is, in this case? If people think the law has totally and absolutely failed them to the point where it can't protect them from getting shot while walking to a relative's house, then the system has a serious risk of  massive damage.

I'm actually of the opinion that Yahoo's comments section is entirely populated by trolls. Because the alternative is simply unacceptable to me.

Gonna be hell to pay if he's gone to ground and they're not able to find him now. Probably the first time a Hispanic has ever been been lauded by the Klan.

There's a very Red State America counter to the Blue State America out there and a lot of people support Zimmerman. I'm admittedly an amoral mercenary who has defended worse than Zimmerman before and I probably will again.

Ironically, FL's "Stand your Ground" law has put the gun lobby in a thousand fold worse place than they were before these "castle" laws started popping up. Used to be in court you'd say something implying, "the law is stupid; it was in his [place of incident], what should he have done?" Now it just looks like blatant overreaching and  the gun lobby's opposition has an argument that it violates basic fairness that people aren't brushing off as nonsense. Tactical, blunder....

And yeah, if he gets away, it's not gonna be good.

I'll be amazed if he turns up state-side. I can imagine his "legal defense fund" website is closer to a "pay my motel bill while I live abroad" website.

Because personally? If I made the national news for a crime like this, my ass would have been across the border the week of. Even if Zimmerman goes to trial and gets acquitted (which my gut tells me he probably will), I hope someone takes all of Florida's law enforcement to task for this. It's an absolute travesty the way this has been handled.

If he goes to trial and get's acquitted, there will be riots. And they'll be somewhat justified.

Riots are never totally justified- they do tend to involve the overturning of cars and smashing of windows, and very few cars actually support Zimmerman.

I'm sort of in agreement. What riots become are rarely justified. The looting, the random and mindless destruction of property. Injuries, assaults and worse. Even if I agree with the sentiment, embracing total chaos isn't a rational response to social injustice. It's creating its own form of social injustice instead.

Augh, reading the comments section on any newspaper covering this is infuriating. About 65% of the comments are from racist white (I'm making an assumption here, but I think it's a pretty safe assumption to make) people who can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that the main problem here is that Zimmerman was never even charged for murder in a case in which it seems very probable that murder COULD have taken place. The first defense for these types seems to be 'Trayvon wasn't a perfect angel, so Zimmerman shouldn't face any consequences because clearly he was just dealing with a troublemaking gangbanging druggie'. I'm half white and half Indian myself, but FFS this kind of attitude makes me wish somebody had given Europe a good hard asskicking before they became so dominant.

That, Ladies and Gentlemen, is a professional prosecutor. Current livestream beginning 6 PM ESDT. I do enjoy how she's smacking down the media a bit. Too much has leaked already and been misconstrued all to hell. How is he going to get an impartial jury...? Also she's got a hell of a job to do dealing with the swarm of reporters and how quite frankly this case is sorta botched already, but she can't say that.

Zimmerman is stupid and his defense is stupid. Also, *insert long set of censor beeps here*
That said...If the only reason he's never been charged is because of this Stand Your Ground law, then that law is pretty damn stupid.
Also, see people being bigots.

My faith in our politicians of the lawmaking variety has hit yet another low. Siiiigh. So has my belief that people are not as stupid as the kind of people Lord Dullard is talking about.
