Just thought I'd toss this up; I've been leaving it on in the background while I code and there's been a fair amount of interesting coverage on there.

Wow.

Zimmerman's dad is a fucking dick. A local retired Judge and a dick just sort of reinforces my opinion on it being likely someone was involved.

To summarize:
"Would they have rather my son been beaten to death? I never thought all these black people would be hating."

And apparently the father and Fox news are now pushing the angle that Trayvon totally had a gun and was gonna kill the guy.

Don't forget Fox News and a few other outlets - I was going to call them (something)-aligned, but I can't even think of an appropriate way to lump them together, as unfair as it might be in the first place - regularly replaying the interview Robert Zimmerman, George's brother, gave to Fox where he says George told him Trayvon Martin was pounding his head into the concrete and nearly retarded'd him.  Despite George Zimmerman's own attorney saying Robert and George haven't spoken in years, and that Robert is just trying to get on TV.

And now the changing story that Zimmerman didn't shoot Martin because he feared being beaten to death, but because he was afraid Martin was about to grab the firearm he was already brandishing.  Lord have mercy, the black teenager could have had a gun.

Nah now that the video is out the take is that Zimmerman and Trayvon were fighting on the ground and Trayvon went for ground saying something like "homie you gunna die today!" and then Zimmerman grabbed his gun and shoot Trayvon, but if they were this close when he shoot Trayvon there should ahve been blood on his chest in the video but there isn't.

Yeah, there's also the fact that Zimmerman and Trayvon were scuffling several FEET away from the sidewalk (based on the position of Trayvon's body), and Trayvon's feet were pointing *towards* the sidewalk. This makes it highly unlikely (hell, I'd say bordering on impossible) that Trayvon could have been slamming Zimmerman's head into the pavement just before he was shot.

Considering the obvious ineptitude the police have shown so far, my main worry at this point is that somehow they'll compromise evidence a la the OJ trial and the whole thing will end up as another 'oops we fucked the chain of evidence up, guess you're free now'. Though I suspect they'd be dealing with some SERIOUS rioting over such a verdict.

Just copy/pasting what I posted on another forum about this:

Quote
http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/29/justice/florida-teen-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

So now there's an anonymous eyewitness with a fairly shaky account of what happened. They were seeing from a window, at a distance, at night, in the rain. But they claim to have been able to see well enough to know there were two men in the grass, one on top of the other, but they couldn't make out who would have been who. They heard multiple shots but couldn't distinguish which person they came from, and then Zimmerman got up walked away and didn't seem wounded to them.

They did claim however that they could tell that Trayvon was face down on the ground. Which could lend itself to him being on top of Zimmerman when he fired. But he could have just as easily been shot and rolled on to his side and then face down.

Or maybe Zimmerman pinned him to the ground face-down and shot him. I guess bullet wound analysis could confirm or dismiss that.

yep, entry exit, could also to the entry angle, and perhaps to an extent the distance based of residual gun powder. If you shot some one close the powder gets all around the wound, or something like taht I just watch law and order man, I am not a crime scene analist.

This deserves a bump today.  George Zimmerman has "officially" stopped talking to his attorneys, who announced they have lost contact with him, and will offer him no more council until... well, the fancy legal language for "starts acting like an adult".  Having abandoned all pretense of an adequate legal defense, Zimmerman is taking an unprecedented step in defending himself in the court of public opinion by directly seeking asylum with Sean Hannity and Fox News.

Stay tuned at the top of the hour for what Hannity has to say about it on his show.

Yeah, apparently his attorneys have no idea where he is. He also tried to directly contact the prosecuting attorney himself (WTF?).

I'm wondering if the guy will try to fly the coop if/when it becomes obvious that his arrest is imminent. And seriously... I hope that's the case. It would be a tragedy if a warrant were put out and he disappeared because the police were too stupid and racist to detain him prior to this - and it would be even worse if a warrant were never issued at all.

Question, could the fact that someone has killed "in self defence" be used to justify your own killing "in self defence"?

I dunno, even if I think Zimmerman is any arbitrary mix of horrible things, I don't think an extra-judicial murder is the moral high ground.

Ehr, my viewpoint is just that if somebody attacks you, and you attack him back in "self-defense", the attacker receives the right to defend himself as well. I was not arguing for killing Zim or anyone else per se (even though I guess knowing that person X is very trigger-happy and has been known to shoot before asking questions would be very good grounds to practice the Floridan idea of "shooting first in self defense" in theory, no matter how much I think such laws are morally wrong). If that was what Pnx was implying then I certainly misunderstood him.
