Pumping water
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:37:24 pm »

Hi guys, I was wondering what would happen if I pumped water with three pumps into a "pipe" (a channel on the same z level as the pump) that is one tile wide. Will the water run quicker through the "pipe" to compensate or will the water build up behind?

Thanks

assuming you are pulling water from an infinite body of water that instantly fills up, the channel would fill more quickly than if you used 1 pump.

You'd get a 7/7 wall of water shooting 11-some tiles before dropping a couple */7 down every few tiles, iirc. Basically a water cannon :p

awesome. The the water source instantly fills cause it comes from three pumps pushin it into a waterfall and the pumps will sit where the water lands pushing it back to the source of the orignal pumps.

Thanks guys

... Interesting design, if I'm imagining it properly. Are the 3 pumps a stack, or same z level... We all assumed same, but that last comment made it sound like a stack.

If your shooting 3 pumps into a waterfall, you'll get 3 things:

1.  A lot of mist

2. Crazy low fps

3. A lot of flooding.

In my experience ;)

The three pumps are one the same Z level, i don't have much experience with "pipes" haveing more than one z level in height. I'm hoping to avoid the 3rd symptom hehe.

Be aware that pumps move water *significantly* faster than gravity.

My suggestion: Whenever using pumps for waterfalls, insert a diagonal bend as the water is about to fall in order to kill the pressure from the pump. A single pump stack, with a good enough source, will easily provide the water for over a dozen such waterfalls.
