Strange Ads
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:14:04 pm »

So, I'm somewhat interested in advertising. It's an absolutely enormous industry - despite the fact that most people attempt to consciously ignore, or even claim to be immune to, advertisements. Usually, I like to think I do a good job of blocking out the white noise of constant advertisement in our culture. Sometimes, however, an ad manages to get through to me and and I find myself paying attention. It's not the particularly clever or catchy ones, not the ones that rely on repetition or shock value. It's the ones that are just mindbogglingly strange.

This message brought to you by the Public Service Alliance of Canada. THANKS FOR THE NIGHTMARES GUYS.

Please share any advertisements that you find particularly nonsensical and/or disturbing. Asian ads do not count, they are all weird.

Giant Squirrel creeps me out man.

All the Burger King King ads. All of them. I wish I could take a bat to that mental image.

I saw a commercial recently for a brand of nuts. Now, this would normally not be unusual, except that every one of their commercials referenced an internet meme. For example, they had Keyboard Cat playing for about 10 seconds, then some blurb about their nuts. Perhaps of note, it was on a children's network, who's target audience would not get this sort of thing at all.

It didn't make a lick of sense but it caught my attention, so mission accomplished?

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Ooh, reminds me of Quiznos. Would have been a WTF if I didn't already know who was responsible.

I know these aren't strange ads per se, but they are strange things to advertise for.  I watch news channels a lot, and you don't have to watch long before you see all these very non-specific commercials for things like General Electric, CSX Shipping, ConocoPhillips, and stuff.  Not any of their products, just the existence of the companies themselves.  Why?  I know you exist GE, but I'm not going to buy an MRI machine or a jet engine any time soon.  Who are these ads supposed to be for?

Yeah, that was this really weird ad campaign, that seems to have ended now, for pistachios of all possible things and they were hiring every vaguely recognizable person who'd work on the cheap.  There was another one with Levi Johnston, but like fuck am I Googling that.

I didn't think about it, but it might have been the same ad-consultants Quiznos hired.

Investors, I would assume. Although I find it a little weird that there'd be a commercial television advertising market for big money investors. (Then again, maybe not, considering how fucked up our economy operates in truth.)

Spambots, any time you feel like having even the remotest possibility of being taken seriously, this thread is a good place to do that.

The guys behind The Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job are behind that one, apparently. That would explain why it's so mindbogglingly strange.

Sheetz (a convenience store chain noted for its built-in fast food restaurants and coffee bars, although apparently not noted enough) has had some odd ones lately.

(The bird one is particularly WTF.)

Here's a good one:

"I'm a serial killer."

"You don't look like a... OH FRIK" *Runs away*

Definitely inspired by Napoleon Dynamite, though.

Bumping with this awesome ad campaign for Carling beer: "You know who your mates are"

One of my favorites
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We need more good commercials like these. I hate waiting every year for a decent (Superbowl) ad.
