Artifact granite bed not placeable
« on: March 22, 2012, 07:35:16 pm »

One of my dwarves made a granite bed as an artifact, but while it shows up in the beds list in the z menu, I can't place it with the build menu.  It doesn't appear on that list.  Despite the fact it's made of rock, I thought my snooty baroness might like to have it in her room.  I'm not even sure if I can stick it in there as a decorative/non-usable item.  Any thoughts?

No, really.

No, but ... eheh ... it seems I already placed it in some peon's room.   :-[  I should've looked at exactly where it was before asking, d'oh.  Urist McUntilRecentlyTheOwnerOfAReallyFineButVeryHardBed is going to be disappointed when I yoink that slab o' granite out of his room and slap it in the snooty baroness' joint.  The horror.

Dwarves really are part Klingon, aren't they?  Granite bed indeed. :D

Hopefully adorned with spikes of goblin bone.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

And perhaps encircled with bands of steel.  Y'know, for those restless sleepers.

Eh, for a legendary item it's not all that exciting.  Encircled with bands of cushion granite cabochons and alpaca wool, menaces with spikes of granite.  Yawn.  Someone has a granite obsession, methinks. Heh, its name means 'Actionroots'.  Depending on which side of the pond you're from, that could be a hilarious name for a bed.   :o   ;)

Eh… imagine a bed made entirely of wood.

The DF material is the frame, where they put what we think of as the bed; medieval humans used wood frames because wood was usually cheap and plentiful, but some was valuable. (Metal frames also occurred, mainly in between.) I would totally expect dwarves to use stone frames, for the same reason.

So are you implying that dwarves sleep on some kind of cushy mattresses or something else comfortable, as opposed to hard wood or cold stone?

We don't take kindly to your types around here, maybe y'all had better go hang around with those elf fellas.

I am under the impression that the Dwarves sleep on piles of leaves and branches arranged in a manner similar to a birds nest or something.

I'm American but my partner is from New Zealand.  I just told her about this via chat and now we're both giggling :D

Naw dwarves are like cats, they walk around their bed in a small circle then flop down on their beard like a nest. The wooden bed is just so they can sleep soundly in the knowledge that somewhere an elf is crying because it was once a beautiful tree.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I'm saying that's the evidence of what vanilla dwarves do… embark on a human town sometime. They use those same beds.

Mind you, my dwarves sleep on stone beds, especially hard stones like marble or obsidian :P

Not being able to make beds from stone is quite disappointing. It would make total sense for a dwarven fortress.

I imagine Toady wanted to make wood an extremely valuable resource (you need 200 trees to build beds for 200 dwarves, after all).
