According to the techs back at the lab it was something called an electric rifle, using a laser to create an electrically charged point and arcing electricity to that point, or something like that. The report is very technical, but Desmond gathers that the rifle's main weakness is that it needs a huge amount of energy, so if it's not attached to a power source it needs to gather background energy for a few minutes before being ready to fire again.
