Dwarf numbering designations system
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:55:06 am »

I just saw a thread where someone numbered his dwarfs.

It's so simple but ingenious, I wish I thought of it myself.

Actually, I just thought of creating more complex designations.

Dwarfs will be numbered sequentially by class and order that they came into the fort...

Example:

EX001-001 Expedition leader
MI001-002 First miner
MI002-003 Second miner
FA001-004 First farmer
and so on...

If the expedition leader dies the next one will be renamed...

EX002-005 Second expedition leader etc etc

That way I can look at them and see quickly their designation and order they came into the fort which makes them more unique and easier to identify.

Dwarfs drafted into the military will be named on what squad they are in but also the order of squad mates. (two digits for second part only because you can only have 10 members in a squad)

SQ001-01-059 Captain of the guard
SQ001-02-076 Second member of the first squad
SQ002-01-112 Leader of second squad.
SQ002-02-157 Second member of the second squad.

Dwarfs who are suspected of vampire get a v at the end of the designation.

ex MA005-132-v which is the 5th mayor, 132nd to arrive at fort, and is suspected of being a vampire.

Once they are confirmed to be a vampire... I will give them a capital V.

Thoughts on this and would anyone have any other systems of naming their dwarfs? I am quite interested in making my fort into 1984 labor camp.

I think DwarfTherapist needs a way to assign the same nickname to a whole list of dwarves. I like to number them by migration wave, the newer they are to the fort, the less I care about them (and having them die will have less impact on fort happiness).

In my version of Therapist, you can click and drag to select multiple dwarves, and then change nickname in bulk.

I get like 15 dedicated dwarves and then ~100 who are named "Blank".

Ah, the spinoffs. I need those to separate new from old or rather "clean" from "suspected vampire immigrants yet to be temporarily drowned." Having to rename 60 dwarfs individually is tedious.

I usually name my dwarfs "Profession1" (example: Miner1). If they are legendary I add an L to their names resulting in "LProfession1". Makes it very easy to know what everyone does just by looking at the unit screen.

Yes, select.   But are you sure you can rename them?  I always got a message to slow down a bit and could only rename/nickname one at a time.

Meh, I did this in .31, but it'd be interesting in .34 looking out for every Dwarf in future forts...

It's a nice system, i can't see any problem after a glance, however your eyes are going to bleed soon.
Their ID tags are too similar and when I tried a similar naming system, it was a pain to find some Urist on the unit screen.
Also, there is going to be a problem when your military dwarfs get titles, as they are tend to lose their nickname. (Did anyone else noticed this?)

I usually only give me militiadwarves names like that. Sword1 to 10 etc.

I haven't used Dt in ages though. You don't really need it with a pop cap of zero.

All incoming dwarves are placed in the box, all given "clear" profession, no skills active. Once the become thirsty, I release them, if they have a high useful skill, I clear their profession, and nickname them the skill I enable ("Spinner" McSpinner, Spinner). All useless are given "Hauler" profession, with hauler nickname (gotta love macros). This also makes it easy to find the thirsty dwarves to release from the burrow, any green nicknames.

Basically this gives them an easily sortable name for messages, 1 unique name to look at. Vamps are named Vamp, or Bloodsucker, or whatever humorous thing I come up with and burrow them to managers book keeper, or lever pullers offices.
