What would a trap look like?
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:25:46 am »

Someone who is good at drawing should try and give a visualization of what a trap would look like.
I tried, and it did not turn out to good.

Imagine 10 weapons of various types all strung together with some Mechanism..
Or a trap that floats there? or something.. Maybe a little rope holding a huge stone
waiting for a goblin to walk under? How do they work..

Any ideas?

I suspect it's swinging axeblades that disappear into the side walls, boulders that swing at you from the ceiling a few feet ahead of you, spear-type weapons that shoot out of the floor and swords that pop out from small alcoves and spin like lawnmower blades.

The mechanism? It's just lying there in the middle of the hallway, causing intruders to wonder what the hell it is there for and thus making them not notice the intricate contraption that's about to turn them into a red paste comparable in consistency and color to strawberry jam.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

That does not explain the trap sitting in the middle of no where outside,
But it makes sense at least.

Weapon and Rock Fall Traps are easy for me to picture, I usually am thinking of something you'd see in an Indiana Jones movie or The Goonies.

It's the cage traps, sitting out in the grass, that are equally adept at catching a snake, goblin or Dragon that are a little harder to visualize. Similar to the variable size tiles that can hold 10000 dwarves (as long as only one is standing) I imagine the Dorfs create a tiny pocket of warped space time to shove the trap into. ;)

I agree sir,
Paradoxes, Warps, Rifts in space.
All a dorf needs in life.

I've said it before: cage traps are the external framework for pocket dimensions and would likely appear as a small, floating orb made of whatever material the 'cage' is. When a creature or hostile touches it, they are sealed inside.

cage traps actually take up five tiles in a plus shape. the middle is a trigger, the four adjacent tiles are just flat surfaces and lay on the ground.  when the trigger is stepped on, the four flat surfaces shoot upwards at a 90 degree angle, forming walls.

One of the adjacent tiles would need yet another tile attached to it to form a roof; else all those ravens and keas and giant bats (for some reason I am reminded of Meatloaf) would escape.

I imagine stone fall traps as string hooked into the floor, attached to another, slightly less secure hook, that is again hooked to the ceiling, where the string is wrapped around a rock.

The would-be attacker, in his haste to attack your fort, steps through the string, unhooking the less secure part, giving enough slack in the line to drop the rock on their own faces.

Considering how fast traps are put together, I generally imagine them something like this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Other options might include "Ordinary Wall!" or "Not Spiky"

The trigger mechanism presupposes electricity I guess, but oh well. And cage traps are a complete mystery.

I'd imagine a cage trap to look something like this. A hole dug, a cage shoved into it, and then someone laying bits of grass and branches over it to hide it. And of course, every dwarf in the fortress somehow knows and remembers exactly where it is and jumps over it every time~ ;p

I would figure a cage trap to be more like a pokeball with a shared repository.

Victim walks on a pressure plate like construction, pokéball falls on his head, opens and teleports the victim into the shared repository.
The shared repository is the actual hidden cage, which dwarves can haul to retrieve the victims
