Fire Imps
« on: March 22, 2012, 07:28:30 am »

Also known as flame-throwing assholes. How do I get rid of them?

I have one and it's set multiple Dwarfs on fire among whom two or even three miners, two cheese makers and a legendary metalsmith. Once, when it set a cheese maker ablaze, I saw it climbing onto the magma-forge platform so I thought I'd place some Marksdwarfs there. But they haven't been able to shoot and one of them is on fire at the moment; the little flamer never climbed on the platform for these. I'd rather not close down my metal industry, nor would I like to revert back to using cokes and charcoal. Whattoodoo? :o

Make sure your melee dwarfs have metal shields and very good shield skill. They will block the fireball and won't be set on fire when they block it. Anyone without shields or unskilled in how to use it will be toast.

Also, don't leave open magma pits near your civilians. Just channel out a single tile for your magma forges, and put the dark green tile over the magma, this will block it off.

Ahh, I thought marksdwarfs would be able to just riddle him when he popped up, but melee Dwarfs are the better choice? Very well. They do all have metal shields afaIk, but lousy shield skill. Perhaps I *should* make an über-hax danger room and stomp them into awesomeness. Better than catching fire, I'd imagine.

Markdwarfs benefit from shields too, especially if they will be getting attacked. Against a ranged enemy, that is very likely. As far as their effectiveness, that just depends on their marksman skill(speed and accuracy), the quality of the crossbow(determines accuracy) and the material of the bolt(determines damage)

I had an elite marksman kill a forgotten beast with a single silver bolt once. He was using an artifact crossbow. Shot it in the brain.

I've given my marksdwarfs bucklers, but they've low shield skill as well. And I think they didn't even get to shoot the imp.

the problem with marksdwarves is that their training doesn't improve their shield user skills, and when they need it in actual combat, they're toast.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Cross train them. put them in a hammerdorf squad for a while(war hammer+shield) until they get skilled, then move them back to the archery squad.
