What the heck do I do with all the useless stone I have?
« on: March 21, 2012, 11:33:58 pm »

In the process of mining out a nice little vein of gold and a few various useful ores, I am of course left with twenty or so metric fuck tons of useless rock. Some of it I'll keep for aesthetic reasons (I like the colour of microcline and kaolinite so those will go towards walls for the most part) but a good chunk of it needs to go and go fast.

My ideas are:

Quantum stockpile and forget
Enough stone crafts to buy each dwarf a small fortress of their own

ANy other ideas?

Cabochons.  That's what I do.

You can library paste those dirty pebbles all over everything, and work great for training you jewelers when you don't feel like using glass gems.

Mechanisms.

Sell best of any stone craft to traders. Plus you've got plenty should you ever need them.

Could make a decent challenge too. Not one little hermit, *seven* little hermits. The amount of micromanagement needed would drive me nuts, but I can see some people doing it.

So far I'm leaning towards stone crafts, it'll bring some money in *and* get rid of all the various junk laying around. I'm debating clearing out a few levels to see if any of the more valuable things I've hit are present beneath my current little quarry as well.

If you want to save your FPS, you can either set some of the most worthless layer stone to have a boiling point low enough that it sublimates into a gas at room temperature (10000 is a good number), or else hack and use autodump destroy or something.  Or do it the old fashioned, slower way, and just atom-smash it all.

Selling crafts becomes pointless after a while, and trading things away bloats your saves.

(Turning them into cabochons and pasting them onto other objects produces much less lag than other alternatives, and also does train gemsetters if you want to go that route, though.  So if you want to actually use them, wierd's idea is probably the least FPS-costly, and still fairly profitable.)

Point is, useless stone slows your game down, even if you turn it into something semi-valuable.  If you really don't need it, just destroy it.  It's not like there isn't plenty more where it came from, or if you have sand and/or clay, infinitely more where it came from.

I have a good 3-4 levels of nothing but sand. I have more sand than any fortress could ever possibly need.

I did not know that trading stuff killed FPS... I think I'll be atom smashing the junk away for now.

It doesn't kill FPS, it bloats saves, which makes saves and loads take longer. (How much longer is a function of how large your saves were, already. Large worlds with long histories will already have very long save and load times, so they won't be as notably affected.)  Those are separate issues.  It will take slightly longer on loading things like what a caravan will have for trade, or what will be in a marketplace if you trade to humans and are in adventurer mode, however.

Trading generally has less FPS decay associated with it than simply keeping it in your fortress does, however, and turning it into psuedo-gems and setting them onto random junk basically just makes it slightly more data on a single item, rather than a totally separate item that chews FPS being checked for temperature or reagent pathing checks.

Make stone pots at a craftsworkshop, while brewing booze and cooking lavish meals.  All you excess fat, plump helmets and rock will be converted into little happiness bombs for your dwarves to enjoy, and contribute to fort sustainability.

Hrm, can you shoot stone off the map with a catapult? Or will it hit the "edge"?

Ah, sorry, my bad. Misinterpreted a bit there.

My saves are already pretty large, full sized world+long history with high civs and sites, so trading probably wont make a noticeable difference in the life time of this fort (I'll be amazed in it last more than 3 years).

So that makes stone crafts a viable option again. I have enough real gems (albeit not super valuable ones) to not want to bother with studding things with rocks.

Just shoot a wall with a floor next to it (so that the stone can't drop once it hits the wall), and the stone shatters.

Again, there's no point in making more trade junk than you actually need for trading.

I used to try major trading away of items, but the thing is, it winds up taking HOURS to get large volumes of goods exported, and fairly long periods of time to sort through all the things in a caravan that are even remotely useful.

As a result, I generally adopt a "I don't trade anymore" stance after I have a fully self-sufficient fortress, because it just saves time.

Of course, if you still are fascinated by the things that caravans can bring, go ahead and have fun.  It's just that you shouldn't force yourself into trading, thinking that it's somehow productive in the long run when you can probably craft your own things faster.

You only need a baseline amount of trade and offerings to get your fortress to its full size, and it's fairly small, compared to prepared meal trading.

The elves bring tame animals you couldn't get normally, so there's at least 1 thing from trading you can't make yourself. 2 if you want to buy whips/scourges instead of picking them up off dead goblins.
