It gets done and I hit enter to save and it crashes..... no idea why. (world gen complete and I think it crashes when it goes to actually save the world data.)

The save is the hardest part, unless you're genning 2,000 year huge worlds, in which case the actual gen is hard.  But the saving is rough, are you sure it crashes?  It can be unresponsive for quite a while.  I've had like 300,000 stone on the map, and going into the stock screen would freeze DF for like 10 minutes, but it would actually finish computing and respond again after that time.  Are you sure it's actually crashing?

nope, it doesn't wait around..... It goes intsta (windows has detected a problem with this program and is attempting to find a solution) message. then shuts down

Also Ive never had this problem before (and Ive down those huge massive 3 days to gen worlds before lols)

Well, worldgen has changed with the new version, notably growing massive in file size.  Previously, while a big, long world would be CPU intensive and take time, the current worlds simply produce a lot of file size, and somewhere along the way your big worlds end up with a stack heap collision of sorts, where the size of the world surpasses the 2GB RAM limit.  You can go to the modding forum and pick up the Large Address Awareness tweak, which enables DF to utilize 4GB of RAM and resist world gen crashes much better.

Are you getting crashes with small, short worlds as well?  Or is there anything you're attempting that's causing issues?

Check your errorlog then, it should be in the root DF folder.

Well, as always, the first goal for bugfixing is "reinstall it".
