I said _leather_ armor, dammit!
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:22:03 am »

I have found that dwarfs using the generic archer uniform will take the best armor/helm/etc instead of using the leather equivalents as listed in the uniform. It's frustrating when the guy behind the fortifications has the steel helmet instead of the axedwarf out front. I'm not sure how to fix this - the uniform is very clear about material.  Any suggestions?

I'm no expert on military, but maybe changing Partial Matches to Exact Matches will help?

Personally I'm lazy and just spam steel helms and other various pieces of steel armor til everyone has them all.

That's not lazyness, that's prudence, if you have enough steel. :P

Me too. There's really no reason not to if you've got access to it and enough for everyone.

Anyway, I had similar problems with the archer uniform, so I just recreated it.  Are all of the armor pieces listed as leather [item], or is it just leather armor, followed by helmet, footwear, gloves, etc?  Because the leather armor entry only specifies what goes on the torso, all of the other parts will still get the most valuable item currently available to the dwarf, which will be steel over leather if it's available.

If you want to ensure that they use leather for their entire uniform, delete all of the armor entries and readd them, making sure to specify the material as leather for each piece.  See if that helps.

You can mess around with the priorities in the squad equip screen. The squad with highest priority gets first pick of any equipment, leaving the remaining squads with the cast-offs, hand-me-downs and second-rate items. So put your archers at the bottom of the list. Then they'll wear the metal if no other soldiers claim it. You may need to assign them an empty uniform temporarily to get them to drop their high-quality items.

My archer uniform, worn to replace clothing, is: metal buckler, metal helm, leather hood, leather shirt, leather leather armor, metal breastplate, leather cloak, leather gloves, leather trousers, leather leggings, silk socks and leather high boots. They're using copper and bronze while my axe squad gets steel.

Wow! I had  no idea that existed, thanks. That should solve the problem.

I tend to give my archers all iron, with no bucklers so they can club things better with the xbow.

Priorities? How do you change those?

Hit P from the military equipment screen. In addition to setting squad priority, that is also the quick way to see what items have been assigned to each dwarf. (Don't confuse items assigned with what items each dwarf actually has picked up and equipped...you can only see whether they've equipped them by looking at each dwarf's inventory with k.)

Ah, of course. Thanks. I'd seen the option before but never looked into it. Thanks, this might help in getting my militia commander to stop ogling all the gear in the stockpile all the time.

leather leather armor, metal breastplate

both of these items have the [SHAPED] tag, meaning a dwarf cant wear both at the same time, however you are free to give them mail shirts and leather armor
