Armors and Layers : What am I doing wrong?
« on: March 21, 2012, 06:19:35 am »

Hail fellow Urists!

I am returning to the game after a long hiatus, and got pretty much everything new already learned (as far as i know), but this one is baffling me.

I am having trouble having my Dorfs wear layers of armor. I make a new uniform, lets make an example:

STEEL ARMOR

Steel Breasplates
Steel Mailshirts
Steel Caps
Steel Helms
Steel Greaves
Steel High Boots
Steel Gauntlets
Steel Shield
Steel weapon of choice

But when my warriors equip the stuff they dont, for example, wear both the breastplate and the mailshirt. What am I doing wrong here? I tryed changing the mailshirt to "replace clothing" and making the breasplate "over clothing" but it did not help me at all...

Thanks for the help!

i believe replace clothing and over clothing is a designation that effects the entire uniform, or the entire uniform of a single dwarf.  Its likely you're not doing anything wrong, except expecting too much from your dwarves.  Just go with mail shirts for now, they are commonly held to be superior to breastplates.  I usually don't bother with armor caps either, electing for hoods instead.

Don't despair though, Toady has recently overhauled the how dwarves put on clothes and armor, so we can reasonably hope they can dress themselves correctly after the next update (within a week).

The "replace clothing" and "wear over clothing" option counts for the whole uniform. If you say you told them to wear the breasplate over clothing you toggled the whole uniform to be worn over clothing again.

I donīt have any problems making my soldiers wearing all layers I want them to. 2 mailshirts, 1 breastplate, 2 caps, 1 helmet, 6 hoods and so on. But I always tell them that the uniform replaces clothing to avoid confusion and make clothes a part of the uniform. No clue if wearing socks under boots is of any practical help armor-wise, though. But it works.

I can't bear to do this to my poor guys.

Has anyone actually tested the effectiveness of this?  Sounds fairly simple to do in the arena, but I know it's been challenged before whether or not layering armor like this actually even helps.

I do always at least give them a mail shirt and a breastplate, and a cap and a hood, but I don't tend to layer it past that.

You'll want to assign the steel mail shirts first, so that in the uniform screen it looks like
Steel mailshirt
Steel breastplate
Steel cap
Steel helm
Steel greaves
Steel high boots
Steel gauntlets
(Suggested you replace steel with copper shields)

Not necessarily:

Bug #4932: Dwarves try to equip armor in order of its production instead of in order specified by uniform

I'm hoping this gets fixed in the next release, but no word on that yet.

haveing extar layers is usess if it is the same type of armor i.e. with two mail shirts.
but changeing the sub layer to cloth will help a bit vs blunt attacks.

Again, I've read that, but is there any conclusive proof one way or another if layering the same type of armor has any effect other than slowing down the dwarf?

If not, I think I'll be testing this myself tonight.

if you test in the arena, giving combatants high skill in armor user should eliminate the negative effects of encumbrance on the group with extra mail shirts.

Tried setting up an arena fight but got caught up in unrelated stuff.

Yet my thoughts on that layering thingy are:

You can layer stuff like mail shirt and breastplate. Obviously more efficient since the enemy attack might be deflected by each of them.
You can use 2 mail shirts at the same time. Didnīt really test it yet, but if each of them gets a roll to deflect an attack it would be superiour.
Some cloth or leather stuff can be put on up to 6 times (hoods, cloaks). If each of them can theoretically deflect, that would be nice.

I think what will make actual testing a bit difficult is that the stuff which can be layered lots of times is made of leather or clothes (trousers, hoods, ...). Wouldnīt surprise me if skilled fighters with steel or candy just cut through it.

And... pick weapons where armor has a bigger impact on survival. Swords or daggers instead of hammers, for example.
