Dealing with Caged Unicorns
« on: March 21, 2012, 01:53:52 am »

I'm in a lovey-dovey feel goodery full of unicorns. I've caught several in cages, but I'm having difficulty thinking of something useful for them. Can't train 'em after all. I'm thinking I'd like to build them into a walled off pasture and put some hunters on the ledge above them then drag the corpses off to the butchery. Seems kinda tame for a Dwarf though.

Any more gruesome or creative suggestions?

Put them on a single square raised area outside your fort near the entrance. Link up a floor hatch to a lever there. You don't needs no fancy-nancy training for unicorns. Just pull a lever and have pissed off mythical creatures bring death to goblins from above.

Imagine the will it took to create a fortress like this. And what have you elves built? Nothing. You can only loot and break. You're not dwarves!! You're just termites at Versailles.

It's not that I don't suffer, it's that I know the unimportance of suffering, I know that pain is to be fought and thrown aside, not to be accepted as part of one's soul and as a permanent scar across one's view of existence.

Set military to station next to your caged animal stockpile.

Order your peasants to move the unicorns to a pasture.

Have military slaughter them as they are removed from cages.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Mod the raws, make them trainable.
Make horn crafts from their horns and sell them to elves.
I hear they are pretty strong. Time to test it on some naked goblins.

Unicorn leather is valuable, so you should try to kill them in a manner that makes as many body parts as possible.  Drop them ten Z-levels, or release them into a corridor full of serrated disk traps.  Make sure you have multiple butchers ready to process all the unicorn chunks.

As always (really I'm becoming predictable) I'd suggest to pit them over as high a drop as you can manage, and land in your dining hall in a window-protected area.  Preferably, entrance should be via a hatch and butcher shops should be underneath.

And don't domesticate them. Breed an army of wild ubercorns to stomp sieges.

Does adding a tag mid-game even work?

I think so, as long as you add it to the region raws.

Only certain tags.  The [PET] tag is safe to add mid-world.

Kickass. And the [TRAINABLE]? It would save a lot of annoyance what with the semi-annual langur-charge. And maybe I could put captured snakes and/or underground critters to good use.

Taming rutherers wouldn't conflict with goblins? Not that they've rought any, I think my limit is too low for sieges.
