I had a similar idea a while back, for use in a Neolithic mod. I eventually made a wattle-and-daub multi-step reaction that felt about right. It may work for you as well.

As for the wood problem, you could have logs have the option to be refined into more blocks than making them directly at the carpenters, though it makes obvious balancing issues

This. The corrosion mod has exactly this (plus make charcoal from those wood blocks) and then makes mining extremely dangerous to encourage surface forts... in a zombie apocalypse setting with contagious bites and all. It's even got a reaction for making wooden mechanisms and wooden slabs.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

How about Dwarven Sandcastles?

Complete with sand-stuck-between-the-toes related tantrums and only children can construct it.

Create a reaction that makes a self replicating compound. It gold, platinum, steel, and aluminum to make, but there is a smelter reaction that takes one block of SRC and produces 20.

I might be missing something but why isn't just using clay an option? Turn one log into ash and use that ash to build a kiln and set a repeating collect clay task then use that clay to build more kilns, lather rinse repeat.

A while back I had modded in a "Plywood" reaction.  I added a "plywood" plant that grew in no biomes and a wood factory that would take in a handful of normal food crops - I've forgotten exactly which - that seemed to make sense as "this is binder and this can be chopped up and used as the strengthening material."  Something like five plants were used to make one log of plywood, which could then be used to build things out of wood.

If you wanted to be more realistic mod in bamboo plants and rubber plants or something so that you would have much more realistic ingredients.   Or make a reaction that takes two logs, a binder plant and produces three logs of plywood.  Require a specific kind of log plus binder so that you can't just keep feeding plywood back into the system for infinite wood.  (heh, infinite wood...)

Or as also mentioned, mod in an adobe reaction.  You can grow straw, collect mud/sand/clay and mix them together to create blocks that can then be built with.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.
