Color me skeptical.  Birds require quite a lot of muscle to get their very light bodies off the ground.  Flight also requires a lot more than just flapping arms, I'd imagine that control would be an issue.  Based on the video, I think he just ran fast enough to lift off the ground, then landed when he inevitably stalled out.  I doubt the flapping did much at all.

Self powered wings ain't happening in normal circumstances. Maybe on Mars.

plot twist, we're already on mars.

Thank the Swiss.

That's not really self powered wings, that's jet powered wings.

But actually, human powered wing based flight isn't all that difficult to accomplish, it's just hard to accomplish well enough to call it "flying" the way most people think of flying.

Though many people can essentially fly with fixed wing gliders through judicious use of air currents... specifically, whatever those rising hotspots are called.

I... don't understand. Do you not know the difference between you, yourself, and a jet engine powered by the burning of jet fuel? Because they are pretty different!

self powered wings

Screw Thermodynamics :D

And this is the first man to fly with wings, not just glide. He generates his own lift. No flapping needed when you have jet engines! :D

Yeesh, there's a lot of reading-fail going on here.

It's powered by small motors and a motion sensor taken from a wii. I don't think anybody said it was powered entirely by the human himself. It looks like the motion sensor just detects the motion of his arms and moves the wings relative to those movements.

That said, it looks like it *could* be fake to me, although I haven't seen any absolute proof one way or another. A lot of these kinds of videos immediately create a 'that's fake!' reaction that is based pretty much solely on skeptical people insisting on something even though all they have to back it up is hearsay, so I also tend to be skeptical of the skeptics. I'll wait until I see somebody prove it's CG'd OR something providing more concrete proof that it was real before I decide one way or another.

...wut.

Uh... no? He's not powering any generation any lift at all. The jet engines are. And people have been doing that for something on 30 years. The only thing he's done is make it smaller, which is pretty cool but nothing like what you're making it out to be.

Seriously I don't even understand where you're coming from. And the original comment you were responding to when you posted about him was very specifically about self-powered winged craft. Which exist! But you managed to post an example that couldn't be further from that, because the pilot doesn't power ANYTHING in your example.

That's cool and all, but the burden of proof lies on the person making the claims, especially when they are extraordinary.

There are a number of problems I see with the video:
-The wings just seem to be flapping randomly in the air.  The wingtips don't bend upwards, and it doesn't look like they are supporting any weight.
-At around 40 seconds into the video, his legs just kind of magically move upwards so he's "lying down".  It looks like he's just being supported by a upper body harness, so I can't really see how he'd manage that without any leverage.  Hang gliders take off by running, then putting their legs into sleeves.
-Very suspicious cuts and shakey cam footage, also notice how one of his friends in conveniently in the way when he lands

Aside from that, it just looks fake.  It's one of those uncanny valley things I can't put my finger on.  Totally unscientific, but combined with the other things it just looks like a publicity stunt.  Maybe a redbull commercial.

In fact, after giving the video another few watches, I'm going to call it entirely fake.  He's dangling from a crane or put up there with computers.  I'd love it to be real, but it isn't.

He does have wings on his legs - wouldn't that explain him being to put them straight, assuming he had a decent bit of speed? All he'd have to do is catch the wind correctly with them.

Mind you I'm not really sure it's doing anything more than being a hang glider on a windy day here.

The idea is not that he is using his own muscle power here. no human is able to do that, and even if he had the pecs for it, his arms would break. the wings are motorised and connected to a controller that is directed by the accelerometers of a wiimote.

I... don't think anyone even cared whether the wing thing was self powered or not.

Though, again, they do have craft that are human powered, but they... aren't very good, really. Not much better than gliders with a little oomph.

Self powered =/= Powered by man :/

And people have flown in planes for decades. This is a man + wings + jet engine, nothing else.
