I had exactly one more piece of pig tail cloth (what he was using).  He didn't pick it up.  I had all other types of cloth, which he also didn't use.

It was probably another item then; if there is one thing that they are missing, then it'll rotate through the entire list.

edit: the claimed cloth count was exactly 37.

Urist McDante: That dwarf claimed thirty-seven bolts of cloth!
Urist McCustomer: In a row?

Wait, did you have any thread or was it all woven into cloth?

Also, was it the same worksop that was claimed both times? If so, did you mass-forbid any stone/blocks/wood/metal at any time by the stock screen? If that's the case, the moody dwarves might be trying to use an invalid workshop and going insane as a result.

I ended up turning all my thread into cloth in an effort to satisfy him.  I guess it is possible I was missing one of the items he was asking for, but I felt pretty positive everything he asked for was available.

Yes, it actually was the same workshop both times.  Hmm.  I never did mass forbid using the stock screen...
edit: using t I examined the clothier's shop.  The slate it was built with was not listed as forbidden or waiting to be dumped.

double edit: but now that you mention it, I had to dump and reclaim all the cloth the first weaver used in order to get the second weaver to claim it.  So I guess that means... something...?

Especially since you have a save available, i wonder if this would be worth adding to the bug tracker as a possible moody dwarf bug?

Go to the 't' screen for the workshop and check the block/log that it's made out of doesn't have a purple 'D' next to it.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

Wow, starving miners, masons locked away in the sight of undead, half of the rooms filled with undead, missing ghosts and dead survivors; this place surely knows what the fun is.
Anyway, I don't know what caused the bug but forbidding all the stuff he had stashed, reclaiming, dumping it out and reclaiming again forced him to start from the beginning this time more succesfully:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And this time he used only one or two pieces of cloth.

If your description of the fort wasn't enough, the items mention of the murderous ghost really paints a bright and sunny image of the place.

I've run into a similar problem, in a 34.01 fort, one of my miners mooded, he picked up a couple of logs, a metal bar, a gem and started collecting stones, he had picked some ore bearing stones that I reclaimed, but seems to be stuck on picking stones and more stones, it's been like a year now and he is still collecting diorite boulders.

He got like 3 pages of diorite boulders on the workshop and keeps going for more...

I forbade most of my ore bearing stones (I want to make those into bars) and most of my other stones since diorite is what I'm swimming on.

Interestingly, I added a stone stockpile close to the mason's workshop he claimed, and had haulers fill it up with diorite, but he ignores that stockpile completely and looks for stones that are further away...

Ahhh thank you so much Di.  That satisfies my curiosity.  Would have been an awesome artifact (though a little heavy on the pig tails).  :(  And yes, the fort has had its share of undead problems (the "Survivor" was the only one dwarf that was alive at one point, after the massacre at the other construction on the surface), but the fort still lives with 88 dwarfs right now, so I consider it a success.

And if Kaos is also having this problem... seems like a definite (older) bug to me.  Would like to know how his turns out.  Dunno how to submit a report.

Rereading the thread I think my miner must be assigned to a burrow, can't remember if I released him when he started the mood...
In my forts I create 2 mining burrows, 1 for soil and another for stone, non-legendaries dig soil and legendaries dig stone so I don't lose precious stones (or even worse ores or gems) due to ineptitude.

That would explain why he's ignoring the closer stockpile, but the compulsive stone hoarding (CSH), must be a bug...

I remember trying to forbid all stones in the fortress and he would just stay in the workshop saying the things he needed as usual, when I let him use stones again he simply went back to his CSH behaviour, then I save-scummed since it didn't work out and I messed a lot of jobs by forbidding every stone.

What I definitely didn't try was forbidding all the items he had already collected as Di suggested, and now that he mentions this I remember doing this for similar compulsive hoarding behaviours way back in 31.25, back then I forbade all the hoarded items and the dwarf would restart his mood collecting items from the beginning and it would get fixed.

I'll try tonight and see how it goes. It's getting annoying waiting for him to finish and I could use the extra miner in other projects, specially if after the mood he becomes legendary miner.
