Why so few wild animals?
« on: March 20, 2012, 05:45:47 pm »

I prefer not doing quests; instead, I like to go out into the wild and see how long I survive in Adventure mode. As such, it's somewhat annoying how far I have to travel to find some animals. And usually they're something like groundhogs, which bleed to death from one slash.

Would increasing the savagery of the world during worldgen improve this?

How is sneaking going to help me find animals to get brutally killed by kill?

Aw yeah

I slept next to a river and go ambushed by 6-7 Dingoes. I'm tearing them to shreds right now, but still, it's fun being surrounded by them and tearing them to pieces.

And of course, some Bogeymen went "NOPE" and decided to ambush me. Somehow they're tearing me to shreds.

Sneak travel everywhere. You need the stats anyway. Ask civvies about the surroundings to find savage areas. If your particularly ballsy you can go find an evil area to harass.  The wolf paws will run TO you. =D

Also, SHAME on you for slashing that poor groundhog. Change your combat prefs to close combat and wrestle it to legendary. Then let it whack on you for a couple days to get your shield, armor, and dodge skills up. Weak junk like groundhogs are the beginning of a legendary adventurer's career. Just gotta up your throwing, bow, xbow skills and your ready to raid.(Fire so that the ammo falls a z-level so it doesn't break.)

Bogeymen are mean bastards to any adventurers who aren't really, really fast. They're not that strong but there are always a lot of them and they're actually quite sharp. Once you get a bladed weapon skill up high enough though, you can consistently cleave them into halves and they stop being an issue.

Never, ever let bogeymen surround you though. Fight them as few as possible at a time.

Also, kit out in armor. They fight mostly unarmed, so besides the ones with horns, armor will let you get out with just bruises instead of a pasted meat sack.

Man, this game is fun, but the fact that it only takes one lucky shot to fuck you completely over is bullshit sometimes.

Every time I think I can take on something, I end up getting kicked/punched/whatever'd in the lung (It's ALWAYS the lung) and choking to dead.

If you want easy mode, never leave sneak mode.  EVER.

You can slam someone right in the spine with a warhammer, and they'll basically go "hmm, must have been the wind" as they collapse and you wail on them a few more times.  You can execute enemies in several messy blows right in front of several bandits with crossbows, and they'll never figure out if you have legendary +5 sneak.

I recommend that you change the "confirm attack" button to "y" or something easy to hit instead of "Alt-y", though, since you have to press it a lot when killing unawares enemies.

As for shooting a crossbow a lot of times, remember macros.  Drop all but ten bolts if you want to preserve your stacks, find a spot along a keep wall that has a ramp down just in front of a wall, record macro, fire ten bolts, collect your ten bolts, then step back where you started.  Use Ctrl-U to set macro to repeat for 200-300 iterations based on character speed.  Go watch TV or eat dinner or something.  After that, it should be night time, so have your adventurer eat, drink, sleep, wake up, eat, drink, and do it again.

Around 1050 uses of a skill that gives 30 xp per use will give you legendary +5.

Also, animals seem to respawn, so if you find a place with a lot of large animals, keep coming back after a quick fast-travel.  Sometimes, places like abandoned castles are great for finding large animals like camels or horses.

Hm....strange, animals always notice me when I try to sneak up to them. Maybe my skill's not high enough.

probably. Later on bandits will really be, "Bill, hey, Bill! Odd, his head just fell off, must have been the food we ate yesterday. Hm, there is an axe in my rib cage, it shouldn't be there, let's get it loose and release it. What? now it's in my guts, must be some kind of weird phenomenon."

Animals tend to be more numerous if you get away from towns. Sneak up a bit to get closer and have fun

You want legendary +5 Ambusher - that's at the point where you have no speed penalty for sneaking, and where you see in the z-status page that you have at least 2500 xp to the next level (you can keep leveling Ambusher up beyond that, but it's only good for attribute gains and offsetting rust).

Again, the easiest way to get this would be to do something like start sneaking, grab a crutch while you're at it, go swimming, and set a macro to move back and forth one tile, and set it to repeat a few hundred times.  After a couple days of that, you should be a legendary sneaky swimmer on crutches with plenty of extra attributes.

Oh, and do that in towns, of course, so there are no creatures to fight you, and you have plenty of food bags you can steal from.  No reason to go out of town without getting SuperFooman in most of your important attributes.

My slight issue with macros is that they seem imprecise.  Like if I tell it to repeat a left-right macro 100 times I usually end up going a bunch of spaces to the left.  Which is fine for sneaking but somewhat screws up swimming-with-macros.
