I also prefer the clearer vocals myself. I gotta give some props to Periphery's singer though. The guy has some impressive vocal ranges, going from the growls to some really clear high notes.

A really big draw for me also is the guitar parts in metal, since I'm a dabbling player myself. Iced Earth is probably my favorite metal band at the moment, mostly because of Schaffer's fantastic guitar arrangements and each singer lending their own style to Schaffer's consistency of rhythm guitar. Also I quite like the occasional "classical guitar" parts of some of their songs.

I HATE Periphery, mainly because of clean vocals, and the growls are nothing really impressive. I also love clean vocals, but when they are done in powerful, sometimes epic way, not something "sweet" like Periphery. I dont like djent either, all those pointless 8-9 string guitars and Axe FX's and POD's, they sound sometimes really fake (Axe FX is nice though), and those 8, 9 strings, are you kidding me? You dont use more than bottom three for chug chug.

Heh, I was about to rant about djent, then I saw your post, then you also mentioned Cattle Decapitation and Dying Fetus, both of which are awesome. Looking at your other posts, you also like Mortician, which is also awesome. You're cool in my book.

 Now, to contribute, Hour Of Penance. If you're into death metal, there's a large probability that you know them, because Paradogma and Sedition are both absolutely amazing albums, but whatever.

 Oh, also I see you like Behemoth. Now you reminded me that Polish metal is great. Have some Hate and Vader.

Recently found these guys. First heard them from their theme song of Jets 'n Guns (yes, that's right, they make video game music), then I found out they're a legitimate band and actually make some pretty awesome music, my favorite being "A View From the End."

I'm not a huge fan of Periphery myself, and I'm no expert on djent or any of that genre defining stuff. I just listen to what I like to hear. I mostly added that to that post since it was what I was listening to at the moment. I like Periphery's instrumentals more than their vocal tracks, myself.

Machinae Supremacy seems pretty cool. I like that sorta trancey ambience intro at the start of Reanimator there. I'm a fan of mixing genres like that.

I might just like it due to my playing guitar. I dunno, to me it's like trance or techno or something but performed on guitar, and therefor a lot more enjoyable.

Yeah, Dying Fetus is one of the big names in death metal nowadays, and there's a good reason for that. Check the new 2012 album, it's sick. Dying Fetus is one of those rare bands that keep improving with each album instead of ruining their formula more and more.

@Cthulhu: While I agree, I love some of DT's Dream Theater's more ambient, emotional tracks. I never was one for the super-showy overly-melodic stuff, my music is all about the feeling, as an artist, writer, and musician myself. (I'd say DT but I use that for Dark Tranquility, a (nostalgic) melodic death metal favorite. Damn it, acronyms!)

@Mr Space Cat: Yeah, they're surprisingly good. Here's my favorite of their songs. They lyrics are usually very funny, quirky, and video-game-related, they don't take things very seriously while still managing to deliver quality, powerful melodies all the same. A great mixture, its always nice to see a group that doesn't take everything overly-seriously and try to act super badass in the process

@ In General: I'm not even bothering to mention Maiden, Priest, and all else. We've already discussed all the classics of Black, Death, Melo-D, Heavy, Classic, Ambient, and all else. Seriously, we've been aaaaaall over the place. Now, I just drop in and hope someone mentions some little-known musical group, which has been a great source of some great stuff!

And of course, the favorite. So, damn cheesy! Its an Appleseed AMV that the band themselves really, really enjoyed, which is pretty crazy, heh, they even put it up on their website.

I really like the silly yet serious lyrics on this one. Very strange vocal style mixing with some epic chorus vocals, definitely enjoy the quirkiness of it all.

Love this line most of all.

Prog:  Look up Giant Squid, Ved Buens Ende, Virus

Ambient:  Try Portal.  They're technically blackened death but they've got such a wall-of-sound aesthetic that some of their stuff is practically ambient.
