What's the draw to a song that you can neither sing along to nor easily recognize the tune of? (I might be a little biased here, but most songs I've heard with a 1/32nd-note bass drum pulse and screeching guitar sound roughly the same to me.)
Well some death metal songs are just dull to me. I enjoy mostly these things, which mean good death metal song for me, if you dont like death metal or think this is not recognizable, this is good start for you, lyrics except for point 5 are not about gore. So here it goes:
1.  I like words recognizable, so after reading lyricbook or whatever i can understand what it is about, not like everything i hear is *bree bree bree bree bree* *roar roar roar* *insert sound of puking here*
2. I enjoy catchy choruses that sound epic. Like "Destroyer of the Universe" or "To a breathless Oblivion"
3. I like meaningful lyrics, or ones which tell a story. While gore lyrics dont offend me, i dont see much point in singing about gore except to make song more brutal, well there is maybe some story but i still dont like it.
4. Some melody or at least good chord progression.
5. If there is no catchy, epic thing, i like sick, morbid sound of sweep picking, like "Frantic Disembowelment" or "Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation" (Pretty high chance you dont know this one)
6. Double bass parts, i just love them.
7. This is more to black metal though, but i like it sinister, evil and dark, like "Freezing Moon" or "Transilvanian Hunger".
8. I love hard to play songs which i cant play, so i can feel like a fucking king or universe when i get to playing level when i can play one of these.

Also if you dont like some harder metal on ears, try playing a instrument, you should appreciate the technicality and complexity of these songs.

Metal is cool, I mean it's a nice genre and all (the drums, oh the drums), but sometimes, I don't understand the draw of the harder subgenres of metal.

Some of them pull the metal thing quite nicely, some of them end up sounding like gurgle roar incomprehensible drumspam strumspam.

Then again, I like the lighter subgenres of metal, the ones with an obvious melody and clear vocals, so yeah.

Speaking of sub-genres, been really craving me some DSBM (depressive, suicidal, black metal).

Lyrinx
Lyrinx (Fucking awesome song)
Austere

Edit:
Also, even though I condemn the ideology, there are some decent NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) bands out there:

Fanisk
Branikald (Very Burzum-like song imo)
Branikald
Branikald

Shit, I can't stop listening to Branikald. Incredibly inaccessible (both in physical acquisition and appreciation :D) music though.

For all the people saying they like the 'softer' side of metal, there's a distinct lack of Iced Earth, Avantasia, Masterplan, Edguy, Epica, Rage, Kamelot, Amorphis, Samael, Clawfinger, Turisas, Alestorm, Sonata Arctica, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish or Within Temptation

There's some good links in this thread. Can't complain.

All truu metalheads post their thrash while the rest pop up "hurr durr I like Sabaton". But it's all cool. I'm in the "clean vocals plz" group myself. And about Avantasia, Scarecrow is probably their weakest album if you ask me. They have some pretty cool guest vocalists in the last two albums while the first two filled their own niche. Not saying Crow is bad, it's just their weakest.

And since everybody loves a good underdog, here's an under appreciated treat from the 80's Great Britain: Satan with Trial By Fire. Some awesome riffing with decent lyrics to boot. Metal, these guys did it right. Wikipedia claims they're some form of proto-thrash if you're into proto-genres, not that this would be the first time Wikipedia contains facepalm worthy claims concerning music. Those in the Blind Guardian bandwagon might recognize the song since their cover of Trial By Fire is included in Somewhere Far Beyond.

Heh, I don't track songs by album. I just really like that particular song.

BLASPHEEEEEEMER!

While I do occasionally listen to individual songs (helloooo, thread), the definitive music experience for me is going through an album from start to finish. It feels more complete that way. The proper way to do it. I wasn't raised to cherry pick my way out of life and music is one facet of it where I self-enforce that rule. That teenage phase with progressive rock concept albums probably helped me form this opinion.

Satan seems pretty cool, I may have to look into them a bit more.

Yeah, the one thing that will almost always drive me away from a band is incoherent vocals, unless the instrumentals are amazing.

Re: musical preferences?

I'd say live and let live. Would it be hypocritical to do that while bashing people for being intolerant of others' preferences? Yeah, dubstep/pop/hiphop/country/metal/techno/whateverthehellyoudon'tlike might sound like shit to you, you might think it is completely brainless, and so what? If you don't like it, don't bloody well listen to it. I'm always willing to try new music. If I don't like it, I'll try to express why, let people who do explain why they like it, look at it from that light, and if I don't like it, oh well. In my experience, people dislike the various subgenres of metal not because of what they sound like so much as because of how uptight fans are about it. Music isn't a fuckin' competition.  ::)

Didn't Franck Klepacki do the Red Alert soundtracks? They are easily the most awesome things in the series.
