What's the draw to a song that you can neither sing along to nor easily recognize the tune of? (I might be a little biased here, but most songs I've heard with a 1/32nd-note bass drum pulse and screeching guitar sound roughly the same to me.)
Well some death metal songs are just dull to me. I enjoy mostly these things, which mean good death metal song for me, if you dont like death metal or think this is not recognizable, this is good start for you, lyrics except for point 5 are not about gore. So here it goes:
1. I like words recognizable, so after reading lyricbook or whatever i can understand what it is about, not like everything i hear is *bree bree bree bree bree* *roar roar roar* *insert sound of puking here*
2. I enjoy catchy choruses that sound epic. Like "
Destroyer of the Universe" or "
To a breathless Oblivion"
3. I like meaningful lyrics, or ones which tell a story. While gore lyrics dont offend me, i dont see much point in singing about gore except to make song more brutal, well there is maybe some story but i still dont like it.
4. Some melody or at least good chord progression.
5. If there is no catchy, epic thing, i like sick, morbid sound of sweep picking, like "
Frantic Disembowelment" or "
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation" (Pretty high chance you dont know this one)
6. Double bass parts, i just love them.
7. This is more to black metal though, but i like it sinister, evil and dark, like "
Freezing Moon" or "
Transilvanian Hunger".
8. I love hard to play songs which i cant play, so i can feel like a fucking king or universe when i get to playing level when i can play one of these.
Also if you dont like some harder metal on ears, try playing a instrument, you should appreciate the technicality and complexity of these songs.
