Is it bad that the stuff I considered Heavy Metal back in the 80's and 70's is just hard rock in comparison to the metal scene that is out there now? Grindcore, Blackened Thrash, Crossover, Death Metal and the like are all about as brutal now as I've ever seen, since the 90's. I leave Black Metal out because in all honesty it feels like the genre is dead, and that hurts me to say. Unfortunately all the true progenitors of Black Metal are pretty much either sellouts or dead [a la Mayhem]. The local scene here is pretty awesome though, full of talented guys with a passion for complex and quite importantly, brutal metal. Metal is waning and being corrupted by the likes of Hardcore and Deathcore acting like they are metal, but those kids are all moving over to Dubstep or some shit now so it'll just get better, not like '07 where I couldn't go to a Death Metal show without getting into a fight with some guy with hair extensions for windmilling in a moshpit and showing respect to noone.

But I tend listen to Emperor, Enslaved, Windir, Skeletonwitch or Ensiferum/Wintersun if I ever do partake in solo-rocking out, but that's mostly behind me. Emperor, Enslaved, and Windir to me are the premier Scandinavian Black metal bands to enjoy, Emperor for epic forest-freezing intensity, Enslaved for their intricate [older stuff here!] songwriting and amazing vocalist, and Windir for being the best black metal I've ever had the experience of listening to. Which is hard to say considering I know so many Black Metal bands! But Valfar is an icon of mine, through and through. Wish I could've been at his farewell concert.

Well, actually, there's a band from around here I feel should be shared: Doom Lit Sky. They're broken up now, but this band is just amazing. The drummer is one of the fastest gravity blasters and double-bass playing machines I've gotten to see in person. The man is ridiculous, and I've had the pleasure of even hanging out with these guys from time to time.

Go ahead, give them a go. You won't regret it. Disgust still makes me want to fight someone, while An End To All Days made me cry at their final concert.

Speaking of buying albums, I've finally bought one of my favorite black metal albums after shamefully listening to the internet pirated version for the past 3 years.

Sabaton is pretty great. I can see how they'd get into that particular trap, though. 'Wolf Pack' has always stood out to me as being rather awkward.
Wolfpack was definitely one of the weaker songs on Primo Victoria, but that awesome section where the hits and misses are called out is pure sex.  Things like Uprising bother me more.  It had potential to be so much better.  It has that awesome scream opener, then we have an awkward lead up to the chorus.  They seem really awesome at writing powerful and catchy choruses, but the stuff in between is always a bit "meh".
I guess our thoughts run along the same lines on this. I've been tempted in the past to do some cutting and pasting to make a sewn-together corpse of the good bits from a number of their songs.   :P

You mean the GREAT music thread isn't the metal thread?
Certainly looks like it sometimes. ::)

Honestly, I'm not really into death metal or grindcore, thrash, black metal, or blackthrashdeathcore. When I think of metal, it's stuff like Metallica, with at least mildly coherent lyrics. What's the draw to a song that you can neither sing along to nor easily recognize the tune of? (I might be a little biased here, but most songs I've heard with a 1/32nd-note bass drum pulse and screeching guitar sound roughly the same to me.)

Hrm... as have I. I think that it might be cool to smash together a few of their weaker songs, but I'd rather just listen to their better songs.  :P

Being someone who goes to actual metal shows relatively often [and the part of one for a while], I can tell you there's no bigger difference in-genre than there is in the metal community. If you can't find the differences and/or the musical ability behind it, well, that's an issue of your own and not of the music.

Black and Death Metal are some of the hardest genres of music to excel in, in my experience. Not every jackass can put a truely brutal 6 minute composition together and make it cohesive and not sound silly [trying too hard] or childish [hence the mass amounts of simple xcore bands "With Names Such as These" writing cookie-cutter music for scene girls, calling it 'Metal'].

Some people have more of an ear for the crunchy metal, like myself. I fell in love with Norwegian Black Metal almost instantly when I found out about it. But now I'm trending towards Blackened Grind, which is more Black atmosphere with catchy as hell riffage included, a la older Thrash. I love metal.

Also, Blackthrashdeathcore makes me cringe thinking of it. Deathcore [hardcore/scene hipsters who claim to be brutal] plus anything metal equals an upset Breck.

I'm a big fan of cleaner vocals, the furthest I'll go is Ensiferum.  I don't mind not understanding though.  I have a Turisas and Аркона concert to go to in a few weeks that I'm looking forward to.

I know people who think Carnifex and Whitechapel are the brutalest bands ever.  It's just kind of sad, what do you do?

Here's some crazy shit.

I'm not sure what you mean by the first part, but about all metal songs ever made ( ;D) all sounding the same, you can literally say that about any genre. For example, all rap, pop, and techno (or whatever it's called these days, derpstep or something) sounds the same to my ears. Of course, I don't listen to those genres of music all that much (thankfully), but I do listen to metal, so I can pick up on the diversity of the genre as opposed to my dad who also thinks it all sounds the same.

Dornenreich

Been listening to that Dornenreich album pretty much nonstop lately.

Deathcore is a very food related genre. After all, they DO growl/gurgle/somekindofscreambullshit about shredded wheat and Brie.

Can anyone actually understand a word this man growls?
