Its hard for me to take Ghost seriously because of their lyrics and proggish-sound combination.

has this turned from heavy metal to death-metal food?
Death metal != Black metal

Also if you don't like some harder metal on ears, try playing a instrument, you should appreciate the technicality and complexity of these songs.
I've actually been working on a multitracked recording of Emerald Sword by Rhapsody of Fire. Pretty good time with them 1/16th notes, though it is markedly harder to play the song on a valved instrument than a keyed or fretted one.

Probably thats why they are used with pentagrams on covers of Satanic Black Metal albums.

I'm more of a Power and Technical/Melodic-Death type myself. Also, scream/growl singing is a matter of technique. I remember hating such singing when I was a pre-teen, until I learned to understand it. C'est la vie.

Random songs, ho!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1nfQO-446U = Sanctuary by Ouroboros

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6wMY4An3RE = The River Dragon Has Come by Nevermore

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax3oPkRqGM8 = Halo by Machinehead, an old favorite

Aaand...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNUEhLavV2k = Bloodline by the almighty SLAYER.

It combines capella and metal. What's not to like.

Tell that to all the people who hate Van Canto because they don't constitute the traditional view of Metal.

Listening to Fear of The Dark atm. I discovered them while looking for a karaoke track of Blind Guardian's Bard's Song to sing over, heh.

Edit: Derp, accidentally posted early.

Another awesome band: Dark Tranquility.

I could post a dozen different brutal tracks, but instead, I'll post this.

Its quite simple. Turn the volume way up, close your eyes, and listen. This song is best listened to in such a way, allowing you to profoundly appreciate the melody and mood... The rise and subsequent drop after 0:50 is absolutely majestic.

EDIT: DERP. Forgot link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js12XdjLhy4&feature=related

Heh, I wrote a song based on Inside The Particle Storm when I was 16.
