Speaking of guitar riffs, Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman has died aged 49 of liver failure related to a skin disease that is suspected to have been contracted from a spider bite.

SSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!     :(
RIP JEFF

I'm surprised by the lack of bandcamp links in this thread.  There is a TON of good bands on there now.   Bandcamp has finally kicked me of the bad habit of only purchasing physical cds.

Woe - Quietly, Undramatically
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
Canopy - Menhir
Cormorant - Dwellings
Windfaerer - Solar
October Tide - A Thin Shell
October Falls - The Plague of a Coming Age
Anaal Nathrakh - In The Constellation of the Black Widow
Wodensthrone - Curse
Daylight Dies - A Frail Becoming
Be'lakor - Of Breath and Bone
Wildernessking - The Writing of Gods in the Sand
Okera - A Beautiful Dystopia
Rotten Sound - Cursed
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade

I follow this metalbandcamp guy's blog, as he does all the work of finding metal bands on bandcamp and posting links to them.

Anaal Nathrakh - Pandamonic Hyperblast (Request)

Haha. Awesome. How many people did escape the room? :P

Anyway, it sucks to die, and it sucks more to die of a spider bite. I would be disappointed if i died this way. R.I.P Jeff Hanneman.

Question: Why is there apparently no such thing as Mariachi Metal?

Cinco de Mayo just passed, for those of you in the States, and I spent far too much time trying to find something that doesn't seem to exist. The closest thing to the nonexistent genre running through my head would be this song by ze Germans, but they're, y'know... German.

So do I just suck at searching? I really hope that's the case. Please tell me I'm terrible at searching, and there's a wealth of mariachi-influenced heavy metal somewhere in the world. It would make my day so much better.

If it isn't a metal subgenre yet then I'd recommend checking in alternative metal, avant-garde metal, or experimental metal, however you might search through that stuff. Folk metal might be good too.

I'd assume that you could find something like what you're describing in Mexican or Spanish avant-garde/experimental metal bands or more likely folk metal. Folk music for different regions usually involve instruments or musical themes from the folk-culture, and folk-metal is a blending of traditional metal with folk music, so yeah.

In fact, checking the wikipedia page for folk metal apparently there's prehispanic folk metal, or Latin-American folk metal based around the pre-columbian cultures such as the Incas or Mayans. Not exactly like what you posted, but it's a start.

You might want to try Diablo Swing Orchestra. Not exactly mariachi metal but they're quite flavourful and some of their songs come quite close, most prominently Vood Mon Amour.

And for something unrelated but completely cool, a local band : Sergeant Skull and the Death Squad playing Nuclear Knife.

I found some instrumental progressive metal albums. Good stuff.

Animations - Self Titled Album
Amaseffer - Slaves For Life

Also not an instrumental, but still good prog. It sounds sorta Iron Maiden-y. Constantine - Darkest Grace

Guys? Any new metal? Any new signs of movement in this thread? Gonna bump it for the sake more music.

Anyway, after reading about Pantera's "influence" on the New Wave of American Heavy Metal and subgenres such as groove metal I decided to give Pantera a shot with their album "The Great Southern Trendkill."

It was hard to get past the opening wall of noise that is in the first song "The Great Southern TrendKill" but they're pretty neat. Drag the Waters is cool, 13 Steps to Nowhere is cool too. I can definitely see the similarities between them and bands like Killswitch Engage.

Pantera is one of my favourite bands, but I don't really like that album. Drag the Waters is great, though. Most fans prefer either Vulgar Display of Power (check out Mouth for War) or Far Beyond Driven (check out Strength Beyond Strength). The earlier Cowboys From Hell is also great when Phil still had a bit of glam to his singing.

Pantera's Suicide Note Part I and Part II are cool too, it escalates pretty quickly.

I dont like Pantera much either. Maybe only some songs from Vulgar Display and some songs from Cowboys From Hell. I like how it says "The Great Southern Trendkill", while they themselves are pretty much trendy, and originators of jumpdafuckup groove metal sound.

Anyway some slam-death:

Torsofuck
Epicardiectomy
Cephalotripsy
Devourment

The Devin Townsend Band is pretty cool. Could be considered hard rock, I guess, but it depends on the song.

While I'm mentioning Devin Townsend, have some Strapping Young Lad

Also, the album Ypres by Returing We Hear the Larks is a really well done progressive-ambient-instrumental metal experience. It flows well from one song to the next, and the atmosphere is great.

Wayfarer.

Old school jammage by In Flames.

At first I didn't really like the 'cheerfulness' of it or the synth'y sounding guitars at places. But after a couple of listenings it grew on me and is now easily one of my favourite things they made.

What's the deal of this, today? Rebellious loud music which causes, and whose artists go on to do, what exactly? I'd be curious to know how/whether you discern between living artists and their music, to be honest.
