Ambient:  Try Portal.  They're technically blackened death but they've got such a wall-of-sound aesthetic that some of their stuff is practically ambient.

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone refer to Portal as ambient. I don't know, when I think of ambient, I think of sprawling dark soundscapes and such.

But, if we're gonna be throwing Portal around here, I might as well recommend Impetuous Ritual. The same guys are in Portal, but I think that album has grown on me more for some reason than Portal's have.

Other than noise rock and industrial kinda stuff, this is what I've been listening to lately.

The kings of Industrial metal.

Nyktalgia is great.

Some less known bands:

Cataplexy - Basically fast paced and aggressive "depressive" black metal. Both albums are excellent. (Also from Japan, not a place known for it's black metal)
Darkspace - The name says enough.

Darn it Ehndras, you beat me to it. I'd come here to mention Machinae Supremacy as well. Tis a rather cool thing that you can stream their new album on their site for it.

Also, do you still have that MC MP server? If so, please point me to where it has a thread up, if it still does. :)

...Ok, this may be weird, but does anyone do death metal vocals here? Because I became interested in trying to do death vocals a short while ago, and I can already do some, but I'm not getting the results I want (not that I'm one of those kiddies that want instant results without work). I can do the basic "foundation" of the exhaled growl (you know - use your diaphragm, lose vocal chords, if you're using your throat - you're doing it wrong), but I'm not capable of doing a lot with it - most importantly, I sound like Cannibal Corpse (or fucking Mortician) and it's not a bad thing, but how do I do smoother, more comprehensible growls? Mine sound really rough and I already can make them sound a bit higher or lower and can do some low pig squeals, but I can't figure out how to get a smoother sound like, for example, Dying Fetus. As an additional question: Carcass style vocals - how? Are both of these just dependent on your voice, or can you learn those?
Yes, I know, YOU'RE GOING TO RUIN YOUR THROAT!!!1!!!, but I've read all the safety tips. I know - don't do it if it hurts (I manage to pull these growls of really easily), water or tea before and after doing vocals, no smoking (good to lower your voice, but will ruin your stamina, which you need a lot of - I don't smoke anyway, though), clean vocal practice before harsh vocals (even humming is enough), etc., etc...
I've been doing inhales all the time and just figured out that I'm doing everything wrong, so now that I can exhale growl, I want to see if I can actually learn decent band-level (even decent garage band level is fine) vocals.

I do Carcass highs, Demilich lows, Vader-ish shouts, Cattle Decapitation highs and some weird thing which sounds litteraly like pig brutally slain, its not a pig squeal, something different though.
Simplest for me are shout-growls, inhale air, then do UGH, like you just got another gas bill or something, try to bark like a dog.
Cant explain other techniques though, for Demilich-like lows, try to emulate burp without burping, try doing it higher pitched to get John Gallagher low growl from Dying Fetus, it helps when you form your mouth into an O.
Cattle Decapitation, try to emulate sound of vomiting, but dont vomit, try to push in less energy for smoother growl, helps if you get your tongue out of your mouth, at least for me.
I cant really explain Carcass highs, but try that first bark and try to make it higher in pitch, it was mostly trial and error to get similar growl.
For protection of throat,  cornflakes without milk (milk is bad for growling and singing overall), warm water and honey (especially for curing pain after bad practice or wrongly done growls, or just a long session)

Plus, you never cant REALLY not use your vocal chords, without them you couldn't produce sound, so thats why even after using diaphgram only and correct techniue you can lose your voice after 20 years of growling or less. So TL:DR, use diaphgram and try to emulate sounds with trial and error.

Yeah, I know that you always use vocal chords, I just mean that you shouldn't really feel them when doing growls.
I appreciate the advice, but that's not what I really wanted - I'm not talking about the tone or pitch of the sound - I meant that I want to do smoother vocals with less rasp. Less of a "barking" sound.
And by emulating a burp, do you mean you should slightly close the top part of your throat? I can't do trial and error now, since I practiced a lot and my throat is starting to get a bit sore.
I'm not really that serious about vocals either - I just though it would be cool. The extreme metal scene here in Lithuania is extremely weak - the tiny minority of metalheads is outnumbered by the amount of deathcore kids and even the metalheads rarely listen to anything heavier than Vader. The favorite bands of the death metal crowd appear to be Arch Enemy, Morbid Angel (the newer albums) and Bloodbath here, so the amount of death metal fans that also have good tastes is even tinier. So basically, I couldn't start a musical career even if I wanted to. Sad, really. Still want to learn to growl. Metal for the sake of metal.

...Being in a band would be awesome though...daydreaming is a bad habit of mine. Are you in a band?

Well if you would want something smoother like Arch Enemy, know that Gossow vocals are heavily double-tracked and processed, though you could look into The Zen of Screaming DVD, though i did not see it its recommended by a lot of people.
And about the burp sound, yes i think so, i dont know though because most of things i do i didnt really broke down into how i got it and how i do it, i just go and do it. Also, a tip, if you ever recorded yourself you can get some natural reverb in vocals when you aim the mic into your mouth, so the sound reverbs from your throat into mic.

And yes, im in a band, we play traditional Death Metal, though we didnt do reherseals in a long time, drummer has a kit which is his older brother's and he would give it for him to travel only for gigs or similiar events, so i have to move all my gear to him every reherseal, though since i bought Peavey 6505+ 112 combo im just going to keep it at his house (He is a friend of mine so i can trust him). Also the bassist is bit of a beginner so we have to motivate him to play and practice, but now he is enthusiastic, so things are looking good. I play guitar and do vocals there, and so far we are rehearsing Carcass Corporeal Jigsore Quandary to play on school talent show. As far as original songs go, i write myself, though we have practiced together only a few our own riffs. Since we didnt rehearse a long time i wrote a lot of new riffs, and sometimes even drum and bass parts, so i think we are going to complete a few songs.

I think my comment made it quite obvious that I dislike Arch Enemy. I'm not surprised to know that they use post-processing, but how do you get smooth vocals without post-processing?
Also, I tried doing that "burp" thing, didn't really work. Experimented some more with my diaphragm, didn't get many interesting results, though I did manage to get a higher pig squeal than I could do before. Eh, I think my voice just isn't that good for metal. That or I really suck at controlling my diaphragm. My voice is sort of low and very monotonous and I'm generally a reserved person, so it seems unfit for singing in general. I guess I'll just keep doing this time from time until I randomly improve. I'm kind of lost here. Don't really know what the limits of my voice are in harsh vocals. And it's more of a "don't know what I can do situation" than a "don't know what else I can pull off" situations, so it's not nice.

Anyway, cool to know that you're in a band. If you have any recordings, it would be nice to listen to them. You seem like a talented vocalist, judging by the range of vocal styles you know. Good luck, man.

Well yes i noticed you dont like Arch Enemy, but i typed it out because it has the "smoother" vocals, if that type of vocals is what you refer to as smoother. Sorry if i didn't understand you. Well, if you could provide me specific song examples of what you refer to as smooth then maybe i could help you. Also thanks, i dont have recordings yet, because i dont own interface to record myself, though i plan to buy focusrite saffire 6 and since i already have bought shure sm57 ill be practicing recording and mixing, because its kind of my dream to be in a metal band and record an album.

If I had a band, vocals would be Tuvan throat singing.

I can't do them mind you, but I'd find someone...

I think you do understand me. Here:
- What I can pull off.
- What I want to pull of. Arch Enemy counts too.

Basically, I can't growl without that raspy, barking sound and I have absolutely no idea how to get rid of it.

Ohh, okay, for these shouts in Misery Index song here you should try this thing i posted before, inhale air, then do UGH, open your mouth wide when you do it for higher pitch. When i do high growls i exhale air and kind-of hum, i dont really know how to explain it, maybe you get it right. To make stuff smoother, like less guttural, try to do it more like speaking than growling. Just remember to stop when it hurts.
