Mod Request: Multiple controllable cursors
« on: March 20, 2012, 03:40:15 pm »

Im wondering if someone could make a mod to enable multiple "cursors " controllable through multiple key bindings this would allow for multiplayer in its most basic form and make DFterms less like a couple of kids fighting for control of the tv remote. Im going into C++ programmiing pretty soon but dont know anything about game design/modding as of yet and would like to know where this would lie on the specturm of super easy to super hard.

This would be impossible to do through modding.  It would require access to the game source code, which only Toady has and isn't giving out to anyone.

Can't you just hook up an extra mouse?

Many things about the game would be better if it were(group specialization and all that), but Toady has chosen to keep it closed.

Sadly, no. In Windows 98, it's possible for a program to use DirectX to access two mice separately, but it must be written for it. In any "NT-based" Windows, all mice control a single cursor even if you jump through DirectX hoops. I suspect Linux allows separate access, due to the "hard things should be possible" ethos, but don't know for sure.

(I was writing a two-mouse FPS there for a while…)

I've tried it once for the Jamestown game but just plugging it in under linux doesn't work.

But apparently it can be done. Multiple mouse and keyboards.

I got it to work.

Weirdly enough though I can't get a screenshot to work with both mouse pointers being captures. I don't know what's up with that.

But it does work, heh, got to try this out in Jamestown. Hope that works.

Well no luck there, the game refuses to acknoledge the second mouse.

Then I tried dwarf fortress, which has no problem with two mouses, works just fine.

Don't really see the point of it though.

I could try two keyboards but I suspect I'll get the same problem as with jamestown since the game itself is not meant to be played with two keyboards.

What would work I suspect is two keyboards being used as one. That should work just fine.

Yup, two keyboards being used as one input device works just fine.

Not sure how useful it is since you still have to wait on the other person since you'll be controlling the same game, the same screen, the same everything.

But there you go.

Might be a cool idea for toady, allowing multiple people to give commands in a single fortress. True multiplayer style. Hmm, that might lead to people setting up their own servers for true community forts in games that never stop going.
