Sewer? What?
« on: March 20, 2012, 02:16:34 pm »

I just got a quest to kill something in the sewers. The only thing is that I can't for the life of me figure out how to get INTO the sewer. Help?

Look for "sewer access" on the fast travel screen, and then find a downwards ramp. Don't bother with the grates, those are manhole covers.

I've also found links to the sewer through the catacombs under the fortress.

If there are any rivers running through your town, the sewer also links to them... but you'd better be very fast at swimming and good at holding your breath, because the entrances to them will be underwater.

What does the access to the sewers look like?  Can I find it by looking?

I also have a quest to the sewers.  I follow the quest compass to a spot where 2 rivers join in confluence forming a small lake and then a larger river out flowing.

The compass takes me to the lake but I don't see any way below the lake.
(looking down a level is just blackness).

There are no obvious down ramps along the shore of the lake, so I suspect the entrance is under the lake somewhere.  Do I have to swim to every square in the lake and try to go down?  I tried going to the center of the lake and going down but nothing happened.

As stated, the fast travel in the city. Look at the detail screen to the right, hit m to cycle detail modes until you get the text one. When sewer access is listed in red on the details, you're close- exit fast travel and look around.

Likely that the sewers run under the lake so the compass is correct but a few z-levels above. Your sewers may be flooded, though, in which case the quest is a lost cause.

No, the compass is (probably) wrong.  Cities occupy big cirlces, and if a quest target is in a city, the compass will simply point to the center of the city, even if it's nothing but an empty field.

Your only clue from that compass is "somewhere in this city".

Those are some of the worst quests.

Good luck though. It's tedious after a while. Hopefully Toady'll make it more interesting in the future. I normally just hunt bandits and siege necromancer towers.

I tend to just cursor over the button to get more quests, and spam enter until I get a few dozen quests for every creature around.  Then, just go kill the ones that are easy to find, and forget the rest.  No penalty for never accomplishing every quest on your list.

I've had most of my sewer entrances in "alleys". A path between two houses when all the other houses are right next to eachother, a ramp down t the sewer and usually spectacular failure since the part I need to go is full of water.

Vampires and husks don't need air, allowing you to finally kill those pesky olm men overlords.

Husks would probably have a problem with angry mobs in cities, though.

On the other hand, those quests are not a "you have to do this", but more a "while you're here anyway...", so there is no problem if you decide to head to the next town. Except your quest screen slowly filling.
