All appointed nobility in my fortress is earned through military service or heroism in the face of adversity, not given freely to any random Urist McBloggs.

Invariably the appropriately titled 'Battle Baron' is the biggest, toughest badass in the fort, with master crafted weapons and armour of steel or candy, who will happily wade through goblin corpses to put an end to a seige, or save caravans from ambushers.

Imagine the look on those smug diplomats' faces when the dwarf who just crushed the skulls of an entire squad of goblins wipes the blood from his helm and introduces himself as the leader. Now that's what dwarf nobility should be.

The other dwarves fulfil his or her mandates not out of necessity, but respect.

The baron makes an excellent test subject for science.

Being a stuffy noble, he refuses to believe anyone but him is smart enough to create an elaborate death machine operated by a jewel encrusted golden lever.

(Afterall, if he didn't mandate its construction, it doesn't exist!)

The position is perfect for raising known vampires to, especially if you want to keep him active using delicious children.  As a noble, he cannot be punished, removing the unhappy thoughts he and others feel about the scrumptuous little urchins.

Otherwise, they are simply a source of general annoyance, mandating the creation of slade toy boats, crystal glass beds, and demon bone crafts.
Guess I'm lucky, my count keeps mandating war hammers.

One can never have enough war hammers.

My count makes no mandates. The mayor just wants bolts.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

I appoint teenagers to every position. Teenage dwarven girls. I like to imagine the sherriff and hammerer paint each others nails with the blood of the innocent, while talking like valley girls.

Hrm, now that you mention it, I haven't seen any material based mandates either.

I just see basic item mandates. Bolts, chairs, etc.
I've had my mayor ask for a green glass bed (which is impossible in the game at the moment, unless we're talking some wanky artifacts).
