Once a Weapon Is Named...
« on: March 19, 2012, 07:11:54 pm »

Does it automatically start causing more damage in combat?

Example:  A steel spear, that was high-quality (but not masterwork quality) to begin with, that killed a dragon and was subsequently named.  Is it even better now?

Named weapons get exactly zero benefits, and exactly two problems:
You cannot dump a named weapon
Soldiers are extremely reluctant to drop their named weapon

Having a name isn't enough?

Knowing the RNG, enough dragons and you'll get a spear called 'Anusrape'. And I suppose that's a plus.

So it's just there for the cool factor.   :D

When the dwarven owner of a named weapon dies, can another dwarf use it, or will it be buried with him?

If the fortress is abandoned, can an adventurer later claim the weapon in adventure mode?

Named weapons are mainly treated as regular weapons.  Any dwarf will wield them, it's just an issue of actually getting them to give it up and to equip it.

Really, you seem to think they're special.  They're not.  They follow the same rules as everything else, just with extra annoyance.

Now I want to crawl through legends, and then go on a hunt for "uniquely named" equipment in adv mode.

Things like "butt-thunder, the rumbling of asses", a pair of copper greaves.

What does cause dwarves to drop a named items and attachments? i.e. I don't want my dwarves holding onto their temp iron axes while I work on steeling them up.

They're not special in terms of game mechanics (as I learned in this thread).  They're special in the sense of "The famous speardwarf So-and-So killed a frickin dragon with it!!!"  8)

Not true.

Its more "ol' betsy" in nature.  "I really like this particular wooden training sword! I've used it for instructional lessons so often, that its now my favorite!"

Has nothing to do with "killed 50 elves with their own wooden PoS weapon!" Type prestige.

I simply find it adorable. It's a heartwarming bond between dwarf and tool of war. Not to mention, it makes continuing the legacy of both the dwarf and the weapon throughout the life of the fort a whole lot cooler.

Actually, 'Anus' and 'Rape' got removed from the RNG :'(

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.
