Increasing river size in world gen.
« on: March 19, 2012, 07:10:41 pm »

So i've been using advanced world gen for a long time, but i never really embarked on rivers (unless its made of 100% booze, it's not worth drinking), but i embarked on a major one just for fun and loved it!. However, when i gen worlds, i keep getting steams only, how can i get it to give me bigger rivers? And if there is some convoluted way to also increase the amount of (Evil) weather i get in that, i'm all for it.

All you can really do is gen a larger sized world, and more rivers.

Eventually, you will be given major rivers when a lot of them meet up.  I always get 1 per Medium sized world at least, sometimes 2 with the default settings.

Haveing more starting rivers (but with less final rivers), higer rain and higher drainage should assist, but it's really kinda hard to balance right without looking at the reject logs.  As for more evil regions play around with the meshes, I found 2X2 to be the most reliable but it doesn't end up with very contiguous areas of evil or good etc.  You may also want to put tile requirements on the end but tis a good way to generate rejects as well.  I think there are settings for amounts of evil rain types and mist types so if you increased those you'd end up ith a sickening variety I'd imagine.

This is a problem with randomly generated worlds. I think Toady uses something like a multi-ridged fractal to do it. Looks sorta realistic, but basically it will tend to give you rivers that flow straight from the peaks to the sea and never capture enough drainage area to become major rivers. I draw my own maps. Nothing like having half your map as a high plateau with one major river system, draining into the other half your map, with one major river system. Makes Niagra falls look like a leaky faucet when it works right. But even when you hand draw a map it still lays a fractal over it, and the way it draws rivers is somewhat broken, so you still have to get lucky to get a major river falling straight into a major river. But I have major rivers on all my maps because I like them.

If you want I'll post some bitmaps I made with major rivers that you can use in Perfect World, or I can give you my current init file which has a few nice hand drawn maps in it.

Here's some bitmaps that generated nice major rivers for me.

Ah, was just going to suggest checking out PerfectWorld and playing with elevation maps.

Thought I saw somewhere on there someone creating NorthAmerica and making a major river out of where the Mississippi belongs via elevation maps (which is essentially between the two mountain ranges that are required for river starts).

Big rivers are there. Look for double-line rivers on the embark selector. They look like constructed walls.
