It's downloading as I type. As soon as it's done I'll open it up and see what I'm working with...

Edit: Crappy school internet keeps crashing as I try to download the file, I'll grab it when I get home in a few hours.

Journal of Hawk, Ditzy Mason, 14th Slate 129

Slothen came by and told me I’m overseer now. Me! Before I came to Thornlens, I was only a humble wax worker. Now I am overseer of the fortress! What a great turn in fortunes. I took a moment to take a tour of the fortress.

-We seem to have great seed stockpiles. Provided we have dwarves to grow them we are in no danger of starvation.

-The hospital is filled with chains. I can only imagine what dark purpose these once served.

-I feel the dwarves here have lived through some great trauma. Their art is all... quite disturbing material.

I will have to give them something more cheerful to think about.

-Well, perhaps the reason these dwarves are so upset is that the final resting place of so many of them is a beard's length away from the surface, in an unceremonious chamber near the surface. I shall set to making a proper burial chamber as soon as it is feasible.

-Part of the brook is stagnant, but about half is still fresh if we need the water.

-We have no decent miners. We have a lot of miners, but most of them suck. I’ve ordered some stone to be dug out to train them and told the miners that have no skill to focus on hauling for now.

-Bedrooms seem to be strewn about the fortress in random sizes.

-I’ve also ordered the dining room to be smoothed. It just doesn’t seem to be up to the standards of most dwarves these days.

--
(Ok, seriously. The hospital looks like some sort of insane asylum with all those chains in there. We let our insane dwarves run free in the country. >:/
Though I have to say it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be at this point.)

Nice. It's my turn next, so if you finish your turn (no offense) I'd appreciate being dwarfed as a random non-military female dwarf (Name FlickerFly, obviously).

Nice update.  I'll provide some context though.  The chains (actually ropes) are in the hospital because there was a moment during the tantrum spiral where I considered having some dwarves locked up.  There were murders left and right, and plenty of people I could have convicted.  Ultimately I didn't bother with it, but I had the chains placed in the hospital so prisoners could access the well.  Bonus though, because of the murders, you can arbitrarily convict and lock up whoever you want now (fun).

I like that you've mandated the creation of some art.  I'd only had 4 statues made when I passed off the save.  Interesting thing here, the deity that is screaming is one of the objects of worship of "Dr. Hannibal."  This is the dwarf that murdered the mayor and turned him into "The Square of Decay," a dwarf bone earring.  He She subsequently made that statue and was appointed chief medical dwarf and bonecrafter.  And miner.  Also of note, he's She's constatly shadowed by his her dead wife husband, and does not have the trait for enduring trauma.  Along with the weaponsmith, she's one of the very few dwarves to have survived the tantrum spiral, despite being completely miserable and tantruming for some time.

Lastly, on the bedrooms.  The set of bedrooms in a '+' formation off the main stairway were built before my tenure began.  The other bedrooms and the rooms carved out in marble are a brand new addition.  The bedrooms above the marble dining room were designed for nobles/administrators, soldiers, and the first dozen or so survivors of the tantrum spiral.  I intended to make sure these dwarves recieved ample reward for their trauma and hard work.  Then 1 season later about 70 migrants showed up, and I expect these dwarves to get whatever mass produced cells you can dig, or just a (large) dormitory.

yay art.  yay for building a new mausoleum.  Moving the bodies there would be awesome.  marble or better coffins, or decorated coffins with matching slabs would also be totally freakin sweet.

look forward to your next update.   ;D

I was quite disappointed at the lack of art, honestly. I was looking forward to seeing what historical events these deeply traumatized dwarves had decided to record. (The last statue is of the goddess of mercy.) I figured the hospital thing had to do with well access, but man it just looks menacing. You do NOT want to get hurt in Thornlens.

I probably won't have a chance to play today, but I'll try to get an update up tomorrow.

dedicate your year to art then!  However, i would suggest finding those dwarves that survived the worst moments of the tantrum spiral.  If you go to the weaponsmith and the medical dwarf, just find all their 'friends' whom are also by seeing who is zoom-able on the relationships screen.  There won't be many.  Make these dwarves the artists.  Also, have the medical dwarf do bone figurines.  Anyone who migrated in 126 or 127 would be ideal, although most of the survivors will have been the migrants that came in 128.

(Short update, but I should have time to play this weekend so the rest of my turn will come today or tomorrow. Should I play a full year from when I got the save, or just play until next spring for simplicity's sake?)

19th Slate
Just as I am getting settled in, some dwarf comes up and tells me they've been hearing sounds from the cavern layer. Probably nothing to worry about, but the caverns are sealed off anyway.

26th Slate
I have begun work on proper tombs for our fallen dwarven brothers and sisters. It is an absolute travesty that they had to rest in such conditions, even for a short time.

In addition, I have noticed our military seems to lack a proper barracks. Right now they are simply practicing in a hallway near the entrance. I’ve ordered a new one carved out. Production of new marble coffins is in full swing, as well as statues to decorate the new tombs. My one of my fellow masons came up to me today and introduced herself as "Flickerfly." Something about her statues seems to truly capture the true spirit of the dwarven way.

I approve.

5th Felsite

The upper level bedrooms seem to have a... guest, so to speak.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He's been standing around, watching the engravers work as they smooth out the bedrooms. Occasionally he makes a rude comment, but they'll just have to put up with it until the tombs are finished, I'm afraid.

14th Felsite
I notice the bedrooms are looking a bit ill furnished, and there aren't nearly enough of them. I make a note to expand them once our miners are freed up. Not really having much else to do, also I ordered some cabinets to be made, if only to spruce the place up a bit. Maybe having something nice in their new chambers will keep them happy. On second thought, I decided to take over production of the cabinets myself. It's nice to be working with my hands myself. Perhaps my fellow dwarves will respect me more as overseer if I do work alongside them rather than stand around barking orders.

While I work, I hear sounds from the dining room down the hall. Seems all 30-some of our children enjoy congregating there. It's not really big enough for that sort of thing. Another thing added to the to-do list.

20th Felsite
The tombs are almost done, and I have ordered coffins placed in the finished chambers and have begun moving bodies down into it. The haulers insist on burying the dwarven zombies that besieged us in years past. I don't really see why they deserve to be buried in our tombs.

(wypie, I think you're dead but I'll double-check. Want to be redorfed if you aren't?)

wypie was the captain of the guard and got upset about giving water to people, plus everyone dying.  He went berserk and was struck down by his underlings in the guard squad.

I'm not sure what can be done about dwarven zombie corpses, I think some selective forbidding and reconstructing the coffins may help.

Yes, devouring cheese certainly is the dwarven way.
I would prefer it if you finished at spring, but if you want to play a whole year then I don't mind.

The only thing  am annoyed at is that there is no rennet, and as such there is no necessarily killing of a milk-only fed calf/kid/other child of milk producing animal. not only will this require a breeding pair of milk producing animals but this will also cause moar meat and *left cow leather boot*s!

And we must have those. ::)
