22nd Limestone, 126
Finally after waiting half a month for the charcoal to be moved to the right stockpile the flames of our smelters are roaring! Although we have no talented smiths we can still forge some basic equipment. Hopefully news of our success so far will reach the Mountainhome and cause a blacksmith of great talent to seek us out.

1st Sandstone, 126

Tulon was ecstatic. He enjoyed his work as a woodcutter at Thornlens because he liked working outdoors. The sky was clear on this crisp Autumn day, and the loyal War Dogs he trained were by his side. He had a wonderful drink in a fine dining room recently. He had admired his fine furniture in his personal bedroom we he awoke this morning.

"No" he said to no one in particular, tossing his copper axe in a bin.


(Our woodcutter put his axe in a bin and now won't cut wood. Even with no other labors except woodcutting he stands around doing nothing instead of picking up his axe. It's not forbidden, it's not dumped, I've tried toggling between those options to see if turning them off and on would fix it but nothing's worked. I'm going to try to make an iron axe and see if he'll grab that one)

25 Sandstone, 126


Alright! We could definitely use more hand to do work, especially now that the forges are up. Let's check Dwarf Therapist. Oh, 7 new migrants, that's a decent amount. I wonder if anyone has any metal working skills?

The punchline is that 5 of them are children. The 2 adults have no skills in anything relevant, but one of them is our first Hammerdwarf so he'll be dubbed Corai.

We have 7 children and 10 adults. Thornlens is becoming a babysitting fortress.

(Also, huzzah! Tobul the woodcutter picked up one of the new Iron Axes. I guess he just did the reverse of developing an attachment to his old copper axe and now hates it with a fiery passion)

17th Timber, 126
Today we spotted a liaison from Mountainhome approaching from the far side of the marsh! We will take the opportunity to show Queen Olin what we have accomplished and trade some of our fine wares for supplies.

(Trading went pretty well. I tried to grab whatever people had mentioned but of course limited to what they had. We got a decent amount of bags and leather which was good, though we have no talented leatherworkers.)

25th Timber, 126
There was no announcement for it but our miners struck Marble! That means we have everything we need to start steel production, though again using standard forging instead of magma forging will burn through coal quicker. I'll try to make some steel weapons and have more steel stockpiled by the end of the year.

Played a little bit ahead to wrap up the trading so you guys could see this:

On our side I requested Turkeys for poultry and then tried to follow what everyone was saying, including asking for glass but I want to note we have both sand and clay here so we can always make our own. Pwnzerfaust, I don't know if you do crafts for trading but it looks like its mostly rafts and mugs on the high end.

So far so good! Everything's not perfect (when is it ever?) but nothing's exploded yet. Mostly I wanted to get things running smoothly so after this first year everyone can do whatever they want and not have to worry about the basics and while we might not get quite there by the end of year 1 we're at least off to a good start.

WINTER QUESTION TIME
What should we focus on while the year wraps up? Do you guys know anything you'd like to see done by the end of the year? Right now I'm trying to start a Hospital, add Fortifications to our Wall and begin Steel production but any one of those things can take priority or be put on hiatus.

Pwnzerfaust, if nothing unfortunate happens I plan to post the save tomorrow and you can start your turn then. I'll shoot you a PM when I do.

How's our farming situation? Do we have substantial room for farming on the dirt levels? If not, I'd recommend irrigating some part of a rocky level. If so, I'd instead get started on a well for the hospital you're trying to get started. I tend to have my hospital linked directly to a room with a well in it, so perhaps start digging a tunnel for that.

Does this place freeze in the winter? If so, please, do make a well inside so we don't have thirsty dwarves in case of an (Armok forbid) alcohol shortage.

As for anything else, try to pull together steel production and get the military going. Do you have anything against danger rooms? Also, if you haven't already, build walls around the entrance and a raising drawbridge with a convenient lever in case of an !!emergency!!.

The lack of water is alright, until your hospital gets guests, then it's horrible. This is unavoidable, so make sure you've got water available all times of the year, preferably close to the corpse pile hospital.

Don't danger room D: Danger room is cheating, and military commander Frank McFuzz wants nothing to do with the elven cheaters. We must train like dorfs or die trying.

Also, I'd like my son to also be dorfed as McFuzzJr. If he grows up to a peasant he is to be drafted into the military and learn to fight LIKE A MAN.

Danger rooms aren't cheating, they're high-tech! And if we don't do that, then we're limited to arena-style fighting or killing innocent wildlife for training.

That's how I've always done it. Send the recruits out into the goblin siege and raise the drawbridge. Whoever comes back is heralded as a godking among the dwarves.

Honestly it's not a fantastic system.

And we actually pretty much concluded that I was to be dorfed as a militiaman, including the babydorf I came with, and that strategy would get me killed. Bah. By the hair of my dwarfly beard, you get your way this time, elf lover.

I have heaps.

Usually not for very long though.

If they get though one fight, they usually get through all of them.

Pwnzerfaust, our farming has worked well so far but it's easy to expand it if you like. I tried to leave a lot of empty space so everyone would have opportunities to use it however they like. The current hospital plan has a well set up inside it.

Uronym, we're in a Temperate climate so the water will probably freeze sometime in winter, though I couldn't tell you when. I have screw pump and well set up for inside a hospital but it will likely freeze sometime in the winter. Making an underground cistern and well that won't freeze might be a good future project, but future overseers should note that our water sources seem to all be stagnant and must be pumped to be cleaned.

I have not built a danger room and I don't intend to but with only 10 dwarves we don't have much of a military anyway. At least we have a couple of legendary miners if worse comes to worse.

Either that or we could try and arm all the children to the teeth.

I thought you embarked on a river.. did it get stagnated? I don't like dealing with stagnant/salty water because it seems sorta buggy that if any stagnant/salty water ever touches a tile, that tile is stagnant/salty forever. All I can say is, be careful.

And it looks like the new release is out, so if it is compatible, we should be able to tame wild beasts and finally be rid of the clothing/ownership bugs! :D

Temperatures got cold enough today to turn all water on the map, including the brook to ice.

Uronym, We have a brook and several murky pools. As you can see from the embark we're right where the brook starts though, so we have both the river source tiles and it is connected to several murky pools itself. Looking at the water in the brook doesn't say it's stagnant, but it is connected to stagnant water so I don't know whether to trust it or not.

18th Moonstone, 126
The merchants started their long trek back to the Mountainhome today. Hopefully next year they'll we'll have an equally profitable exchange.

15th Opal, 126
Our first steel bars came out of our smelters today! Soon we'll have a proper set of dwarven steel arms!

17th Obsidian, 126
Buzzards! A swarm passed overhead today, interrupting our attempts to retrieve the last of the trade goods. Our war dogs took down a couple and thankfully the swarm passed without causing any damage.
