Potential Vampire
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:41:27 am »

So I have reason to believe that I have a vampire trapped in a siege workshop right now, but I'm not sure. It has seven children, four of whom are not presently in the fortress, and three in the fortress with her husband, who I also think is a vampire due to the fact that they share all seven children and three former associations. Her husband has no kills, but this dwarf has forty kills, all of them being 'giant' animals in some place that is not my fortress. Thus far two of my original seven dwarves have been found dead, so this is pretty urgent. The reason I even bother asking is because recently she got the thirsty status arrow and I was fairly certain that vampires didn't get thirsty.

Give them a nice trap gauntlet to run, maybe a "dodge-me" trap over a 10-z pit lined with menacing copper spikes, so they explode into greasy goblin gibs on impact and leave the lovely iron bits for your dwarves to collect at leisure.

hunters and rangers in world gen get kills too, often even notable kills against bandits and such, that doesn't mean vampire. In fact, that they are all giant animals is a clear indication of a hunter or ranger. Check the militairy stats, you might have found a marksdwarf squad captain.

I'm pretty sure a vampire will never show up with a family, unless (s)he got turned into one a day before your world gen ended. They usually get found out by relatives and have to flee before comming to your place.

They don't.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

It's only a vampire if a HUGE part of the kills are sentient creature kills. Lots of animal kills only means that she's a historical figure who hunted them.

engrave a slab for one of the victims and you'll see the name of the vampire, it seems.

I like to check on each new migrant to see if a vampire is trying to slip in. If I suspect a dwarf is a vampire, I generally give him a nickname and use the viewing tool to view their deity under relationships. The dwarf you nicknamed will show up on that list of worshipers/cursed as 'nickname' LastName. This list also will denote if that particular person is a vampire as well. I have been finding this very effective in rooting out vampires before they do harm to my people. I don't know if doing this trick is a bug or not because it has essentially eliminated the chance for error.

My resident vampire is 69 years old, and 4/5 of her z page are filled with previous civilisations.  She also has no family.

She was also the only skilled cook and fisherdwarf when she arrived.  I tried designating her on a ledge for some cavern exploration, but she just stood in the centre of the smelting dock, so I walled her in.

She's been there for three years now, isn't ever hungry and is actually quite content.

Which freaks me out that little bit extra...

Drop her a table and chair and make her the fort paper pusher.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Or set up a lever for her to pull on that cavern edge - her and her alone - and wall her in once she's there. Maybe with a pick, and she can do some cavern mining too....

Guys, she's not a vampire. She's an ordinary hunter dwarf.
