Engineering is required to make gunpower, and I assume gun components as well.

Name:Gavin Aurelius
Description: Man in his late 20s, short unkempt brown hair, a blue tarnished robe. Blue eyes and a round, normal face. Big circles under his eyes, mostly from drinking and exhaustion due to improperly casted spells.
Background: Slightly eccentric, gambler-cheater, mild respiratory problems. Likes alcohol and loose women.
Mischevious child of a village couple from the Udanese border, ran away out of spite while teenager. Magical powers maifested in his early 20's.
He trained briefly with another, older hedge wizard in Fiumefurt., whom he robbed and ran way.
He wants to learn more about his powers and expand them but at the same time, he is out to make a fortune and set himself up with a royal lifestyle, regardless of others.
Obviously he plans to use magic for it.
His name is the one he adopted to break away from his lowborn past.
Starting resources: 0d, nothing but robe on his back.
A major skill/power: A talented hedge wizard. +1 to power, +1 control and +1 resolution. Uses soul energy of those sacrificed in the spell or his own if its a minor spell or trick. Has to replenish it to avoid death by exhaustion.

If I am not wrong, just being capable of using magic already costs you one out of the three starting ducats.
This is true, IIRC.

"Magic" is a skill in-and-of itself. You can only get to put a +1 in two of the three things, and then you have to train the third.
Anyways, Azthor, I hope you don't mind if it is my sincere hope that you roll a 1 on the training roll and accidentally, like, blow your mansion up or something. Just so Terryn has cause to investigate, and meet an actual spell-caster.

I don't think training can backfire like that, but I can probably try a minor spell and see what comes out of the rolls; a major one would probably utterly annihilate me on a critical failure.

Self manufacture? Sure, but there will still be cost involved

Also, looking over your sheet again - Specialists are actually 2d. So you'd have to use up the last ducat you have if you want a personal assistant engineer

Azthor: Backfire on a control or a power roll can easily turn into large explosions depending on the spell attempted

drop the engineer then, who needs em I'll make the gunpowder myself, can I use 1 ducat to hire normal non-specialist workers to simply run the forge like normal and another to buy materials and simply trade the stuff they make, simply so I can make some profit from that business while I continue to run my personal one?

In terms of your 'business' - we have business rules these days. Gunpowder isnt currently listed a 'good' simply due to the lack of widespread production. For the purposes of the system, i'd probably considering it a 'special' item and rank it around Tier 5-6 which would require engineer input to produce, but a single unit would count as several barrels.

Your business as it stands is basically fluff and not really functional beyond a workspace for your endeavors.

I do reckon I am not supposed to have that much Intel, I will edit my post shortly. I should probably the able to recognize him if I see him firsthand though; much as it must be noted doing so would, far more likely than not, be a suicidal act.

Any chances of which I'd recognize Rectyl, given how he has seemingly been to the court before?
