and ones along rivers, since these are were most of the foreign trade will come from, (I'd worry about the cities along the river, did you know that a viking force once sailed upriver and sacked paris?)

Well, they have an attractive target on the mouth of the river as well.

The joys of being inland: Can't be raided :P

One could also argue that coastal and riverside cities would be best off, because (as trade centers) they would be both rich and relatively heavily defended as the valuable property that they are.

You should wory about the capitol

To not be a target for raiding you'd have to be really far inland as vikings would also sometimes moor somewhere near the coast, get to shore, walk for a long time, then sack those who thought they were safe (dun dun duuun)

and as I said before Paris was sacked once, so it doesn't matter where you are, if the raiders are determined enough then they can take, nothing short of a full army would deter them if theres loot inside, and ports would be easily accesible since you could either drop down next to them, or sail into the port (Not smart but has been done) the only cities to ever survive full on viking attacks were places like Constantinople, which had Massive walls and was the centre of the most powerful western empire at the time

Something tells me that being rich would surley attract alot of raiders and pirates.

another thing about the army movement, this might be a bit late but I was asleep so here goes, shouldn't cavalry armies get bonusus when moving?

An exclusively cavalry army will doubtlessly get bonuses. Some will be situational - I may improvise if a strange situation, like a cavalry only army, arises.

And penalties when riding against spear formations...

No. Gunpowder was banned. Besides pike and shot is later than middle ages.

Probably would have referred to longbowmen or crossbowmen instead.

Pikes existed for long, Pike and Shot are however more of a Renaissance thing - although there were armies with pikes in front of archers in the middle ages, the technique was truly developed by the Spanish Tercios with arquebus. Ardas is right.

OK I gotmy wording wrong, but the Rennaisance is part of the Middle ages, the late middle ages went from 12th century to 16th century, and the rennaissance was from 14th century to 17th, I'M A HISTORY GEEK, DO NOT TRY TO PROVE ME WRONG

In the 15th and 16th century the modern era began.
The renaissance began 15th or 16th century.

The Middle-Ages end when the Renaissance begin. There's a reason why it's called the Renaissance; it begins in the 15th century, in 1453 or 1492, depending on the historian, but never in the 14th.

There is a reason the rennaisance is called the rennasiance era, and the middle ages are the middle, AGES, the rennaisance is not an age that comes after the midle ages after the middle ages comes the modern age, with the industrial era, the computor era, things that are eras are not ages OK, but pike and shot didn't come around till the late middle ages so there wouldn't be the pike and shot any ways
