Begin production of arquebuses.

This would require more money than you have sir and/or the facilities of production (like a business) to reduce costs.

"Well, for someone who is not interestd in the arcane you sure seem to talk like you know much.... do you mind me asking what happened to your hand? It doesn' t seem like something caused by plant matter."

Gavin narrowed his eyes a bit and lookd carefully at herbalist. There was something that she was hiding. Or thats what Gavin felt.

Your question startled her out of thought, "Oh, a little mishap with a poison I was working on. The concoction I came up with hardens the tissues it comes in contact with. Causes an inability to swallow, speak or breath after a few hours." She smiles a little, though filled with sadness, "It works well, smells awful and from what I hear, tastes worse."

"I know a fair bit of theory in the arcane. I...worked closely with a mage for some time when I first arrived in Shola. Nice man, a bit crazy, but always willing to assist an apprentice herbalist gather oddities."

"I can't exactly say you caught me off guard there. So, how much are you asking such information?"

"Really? May I inquire about that fellow? He sounds like someone who I would like to know. Maybe he has more information on some good books... Sorry if I seem bit obsessed with the topic, but I rellay need to get my research moving."

"Well then, I guess I should start asking questions, if I may. I still need to know the general mission of the Ligorian forces, and who's leading them for starters."

[1] She frowns, "Can you speak with the dead?"

"Well then, I guess I should start asking questions, if I may. I still need to know the general mission of the Ligorian forces, and who's leading them for starters."

"They're continuing the campaign Nikephoros started. Since he's dead now, their forces are led by one of the other generals. Seems the Lady de Plume has had some fun jerking them around, stalling out the previous campaign for quite some time."

"There wasn't much left after his accident. But you should know, you're in his old lab..."

[1?] You don't happen upon too many opportunities in Shola. The black alchemists are always looking for favors, though they're not the kind most people would want to accept. The return on investment, so to say, isn't as high as it should be for the kinds of things they want done or need. Often they repay in their craft.

What was his name? and what did he do there?

Upon the return to Shola, thoroughly search the lab for everythign on previous occupant: any private posessions, writing, equipment, anything that could explain his accident.

"Ciruin Shodal was his name. I'm not entirely sure what he was attempting, but I know they cleaned the room with fire...lots of fire"

[53,?,24] Your search of the lab is successful in several ways. Among the remainder of the items that were left in the lab upon your arrival there was a series of journals, mostly fire damaged, that apparently detailed several rather catastrophic failures. Ciruin's idea of catastrophic likely changed just prior to his death, since from what you can see killing the plant was the worst that happened.

His lab had several 'false' sections of the floor and walls, used to store various chemicals, powders and other miscellaneous objects that have been destroyed by heat and age. Among these you found a few more journals which kept records of jobs he performed for 'investors'. Likely information Cain would enjoy reading. You find one journal that detailed the work Ciruin was performing prior to his death. Apparently he was attempting to promote growth of plants through magical infusion. He had apparently succeeded, although it corrupted the plants he attempted this with. Many of them simply grew exponentially, then died. Others, prior to the end of the entries, grew poisonous or acidic as well. The last sample he was working with was some cave moss that was already capable of consuming decaying organisms.

"Pretty much the basics. Name, appearence. That sort of thing along with political opinions."

"Very well, I'll call for you when I have something of use"

You sell the gunpowder for [5] 2.4d, plunging 2d back into your work. Being only you, and your mostly noobish apprentice, it will take you two seasons to complete a large enough quantity to be considered a 'unit'.

"Thank you for your time and assistance Cain. I'll likely be needing it more in the future. Good day to you." And with that, Laythe left Cain's manor and headed back to her accomodation.

Laneira listened to the Merchants' conversation while taking note of the areas in which they spoke of, and the fact of banditry and a blockade, giving the occasional agreement and a nod to their points. Danger was present, but that was her job, to face danger with a smile as her contractors go off and support the massive hierarchy of goods and trade.

"I command a full regiment of disciplined men and women, versed in the tactics of military and headed by a skilled Captain," she replied upon being asked on whether her group would continue working with them, not telling the Captain's name for particular reasons. "I am bound to my contract, as by my free will. To Veruna, I shall agree to."

She paused a while, and decided this was the best time to ask them in the most sincere tone she could muster - not that she had to hide anything, that is. "However, Av, Solan, I'm willing to disregard pay for a different matter. If, no, when we get to Veruna, I'd like to request someone to teach me the finer details of Swordsmanship. Even if I could learn it alone, under a skilled mentor would seem better. And if possible, some...tips on how to start a business." She didn't know much about Veruna, hearing it was another seaside town. But she would burn the bridge when she got there, figuratively.

Include a deal with the Merchants after agreeing to continue work with them and to head to Veruna.
