"Well... That was unexpected. It is only a matter of time until someone comes to check the source of that explosion and trying to flee the city with all these rioters around would probably be suicidal. Alas, I suppose "suicidal" presents better odds than standing around here and I might get something out of getting the information out to a neighbouring Lord; that leaves me little room for choice".

Flee Polca amidst the chaos, keeping an eye open for the battle's progress while within the city; head towards Ligoria, stopping to meditate and attempt casting the spell once more once sufficiently far from the city.

Join battle alongside the Crimson Guard.

Nothing else to do now than fighting, was the reason.

"So, whats all this then?"

[1] The preacher's face turns red when he sees William. Without hesitation, he shouts "For the Bright One, CHAAAAARGE!" and in one movement, the crowd rushes towards Polca's forces. [4] Laythe's cavalry manages to stop the peasant crowd from reaching William's forces - by taking the blunt of the assault. In hindsight, maybe placing that regiment there was not a good idea. [5] William and Terryn's forces quickly move in to engage - the cavalry will only fight alone for one turn.

THE BATTLE BEGINS

William's forces:
William: +1 to tactics
Terryn: +1 to tactics
The Crimson Guard: 2 strength, +2 to tactics
The Thornbred Knights: 1 strength
The City Watch: 1 strength
Laythe's royal cavalry: 2 strength - will fight alone for the first turn

The peasant forces:
3 peasant regiments: 3 strength

Turn 1
[4+2 vs 3+3]
The royal cavalry takes massive damage when the ranks of the peasants collide with them. The knights don't have space to manoeuver and are taken by surprise - nearly half of them fall during the first seconds, pulled down from their horses and stabbed to death by pitchforks and kitchen knives. [-1 strength to Laythe's cavalry. -1 strength to the first peasant regiment, which is destroyed]

Turn 2
[Because of the tactics bonus, the flank auto-succeeds]
[7+1+3 vs 2 +5]
When William's forces join the melee, the battle is finished quickly. The peasants are not trained for warfare and while they are motivated by the preacher's shouts, they are unable to match the soldiers facing them. The City Watch, which was in front of William's forces, was nearly completely destroyed - the guards were as much soldiers as the peasants were, and their morale was even weaker than William's popularity with the population. Nearly all of the peasants in the mob died - the Thornbred Knights had managed to get behind them and showed no mercy. If the peasants could have backed away and reformed their lines, maybe the battle would have been longer, but with fire on their flank, an army in front of them and trained soldiers behind them, they didn't stand a chance. [-1 strength to the City Watch, which is destroyed. -2 strength to the peasants, which are destroyed.]

The battle's aftermath
[Since all the PCs fought in the battle, I'll roll to see how they ended up.]
[1] Laythe suffered serious wounds during the battle, but she survived (a few Crimson Guards recognized her and protected her during the melee). She was pulled down from her horse and she suffered some wounds from pitchforks, but the main damage was done by the people who walked on her. It's hard to tell how bad it is, but from what she can feel, alot of her ribs are broken, and her left leg hurts as hell. She'll live, but the next months will be hard for her.
[2] Terryn was wounded by a peasant with a kitchen knife, leaving him with a nasty wound on the should. It might leave a scar.
[5] William killed dozens of peasants by himself, since he was the first to reach their army, and by the end of the battle all the soldiers around him are looking at him with respect. At one point of the battle, he's pretty sure he was knee-deep in blood. And at the end, he finds a good surprise : a wounded but still alive preacher, who no longer appears to be willing to fight for the Bright One...
[5] Eurika stood at William's side during the whole battle, and she collected as much glory as he did - even saving her boss once or twice from the hits of angry peasants.

Result of the uprising:
-1 to port size because of the raiding and the fires.
-1 to population. Between the numerous fires and the massacre in the main street, alot of citizens won't live to see another day.
The Old Lord is dead, and the populace knows that William killed him.
There was a forest fire near the city. [If the GMs agree, the land where the woods burned could be turned into a parcel of farmlands]
The fog is still spreading from the manor.
A shockwave of unknown origin shook the south of the city.

This was great. He did not expect an all out massacre as the result of his little "smoke and no mirrors", but at least he would get his loot, while idiots in charge of this place got their comeuppance.
It was time to leg it.

Try to discretly approach port using the chaos and disorder as cover. Do some looting on my way there. If there are any boats, take one and sail towards Shola along the coast. If not, return to the den with the loot.

A cry, a flash of steel, and then blood splattered across Terryn's face like some grim masque. He sneered, placing a booted foot atop the chest of a fallen peasant and tearing his blade from the throat with a wet pop. The injury he had incurred prevented him from using his buckler, but he had fought on all the same, Oswald acting as his shield. Panting, the Hedge Knight rose to his full height and surveyed the streets.

The smoke stung his eyes, and he told himself that was where the tears were coming from, creating rivulets in his bloody disguise. Not the flames, not the child he had cut down or the mother that had shielded him. The smoke. Terryn coughed and slowly made his way over to the Lord, Oswald ever present at his side. Once out of the smoke, Sir Terryn took in a deep breath of rancid air and quelled his emotions.

"My Lord," he was almost cheerful, though his grin was more a grimace and his arm hung limp at his side, "It would appear the curse is broken. You are no Nikephoros, and you have won."

William was covered in blood and smiling the twisted smile of a mad man. His smile twitched upwards as he surveyed the bloodstained plaza. This was the chaos he was fighting against, this was the thing he fought and killed to end...he hoped it wouldn't be in vain.

"Tell Laythe and whoever else assisted me to meet me in the center of the battlefield...You're invited too Eurika..."

He then grabbed the preacher by the collar, before breaking both of his hands and knees with Zerim's pommel.

"I'm going to show you just how much of a demon I am...preacher."

William's men are to find a large stake, or a section of wood that can be made into one. Or a pike or metal bar.

He stood up straighter when he heard Terryn. The preacher was still being held by his robe in one hand, with Zerim in the other.

"Terryn, pleasure to see you alive...And you've assisted me. We're waiting for two others. Oh and don't call me Lord, call me Will. Like a Blackrose cigarette?"

Eurika orders (asks?) some of the guard to comb the city for a preacher name Aurelius. She also tells them the appearance of him, before following William.

She wipes her blades on a fallen man's tunic, and straightens up.

Terryn slowly slid his long sword into its scabbard. His sword-arm was pained from overuse, but his shield-arm had gone numb and cold from the injury. That was not a good sign, he guessed. Arching an eyebrow, the Hedge Knight made to shrug and stopped, reminding himself of the pain it would no doubt cause. "I'm one more in favor of a warm drink than a smoke, William, but I'll accept that offer."

Flee Polca amidst the chaos, keeping an eye open for the battle's progress while within the city; head towards Ligoria, stopping to meditate and attempt casting the spell once more once sufficiently far from the city.

[4] You flee Polca without any trouble. [3-1] Once again, you fail to cast the spell, but this time the power doesn't backlash.

Try to discretly approach port using the chaos and disorder as cover. Do some looting on my way there. If there are any boats, take one and sail towards Shola along the coast. If not, return to the den with the loot.

[1] You are trying to get to the port, when suddenly you realize you took a wrong turn... You end up looking at a large field of dead bodies with men in armor looking for wounded. [5] No one recognizes you, thanks to the blood and the smoke. [4] You manage to get to the port without any more trouble, [6] except that greed leads you to take [3] 0.3d from dead bodies on your way there, and a few peasants see you looting the corpse of their friend. They quickly surround you, and the one with the smartest look talks with a threatening voice.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?"

William's men are to find a large stake, or a section of wood that can be made into one. Or a pike or metal bar.

[1] The longest thing you can find is a pitchfork. Not really symbolic, sadly.

Eurika orders (asks?) some of the guard to comb the city for a preacher name Aurelius.

[4-1] The city watch is in ruins and most soldiers are tired, so none of them go searching for him. However, a man claims he spotted someone who fitted the description and who was going towards the port, only a few minutes ago. [6] A dozen soldiers go looking for him, but the smoke doesn't help the search at all [I'll do a -1 roll for their chances of finding him after all actions made by Gavin until the day is over/he leaves the city].

Eurika glances at the pitchfork and hazards a guess.

"If you're looking for something symbolic, you could say the revolt was of, by, and for the people, and punish whoever is ... erm, guilty of it by the tools of the people?"

She wipes some of the blood off of her hair. Having a white robe didn't help in hiding blood.

Laythe sets up residence within the city barracks for the time being, considering the fog and destruction around the manor. The knights are to stand guard around the barracks until further notice.

Send messengers to William and Eurika (Separate ones), calling for a private meetings with them.

William drew a tin out from his boot. He pulled a cigarette from it and lit it. He handed one to Terryn, then struck a match for him.

He glanced at Eurika.

"That's ridiculously stupid, Eurika. So I might use it if I can't come up with something better...So I'm guessing you need a medic, Terryn?"

He turned his attention back to the Plaza.
"This is what I'm fighting against, all of this chaos and bloodshed..."

Eurika looked up at William, head to the side, before looking around again.

"So... chaos plus chaos equals order?"
Her tone was neutral, careful not to sound questioning/judgemental/offending.

Eurika raised a eyebrow at the messenger's words, and followed him back to this 'Laythe' person.

She made sure she was fully armed and armored, as usual.

His hand was trembling from exhaustion as he brought the cigarette to his lips. "Yes, I could probably use one. Though if it's all the same to you, I'll wait until I can find someone with a little more training than a field medic." He smiled at William, and then glanced to the white-haired woman. It seemed suddenly as if this were the first time he had ever noticed her. The smile faded.
"Before you can create order, you first need to make room for it." He was quoting one of Sir David's teachings.

William dropped the whimpering priest, then turned and stared at Eurika. He took a few steps toward Eurika. He was smiling as he put his free hand on Eurika's shoulder. His voice was strange and for some reason, perhaps in the way he was standing, he seemed ready to kill someone...or at the very least hit someone.

"Do you think I want this Eurika? Do you think that I wanted to slaughter all these people...?"
