((Mark Anthony don't exist in this world.))

"A speaker, mage and a swordsman, all wrapped up into one stunning bundle."

William smiled.

"You'll be paid a one ducat retaining fee per year, with bonuses depending on how well you do on...assignments I might happen to have. But before all that I would like to see how well you do in combat, possibly against one of my troops."

The New Guy...

"So, your name might be?" Terryn queried, before pausing a moment and waving a hand. "Of course, you'd like to hear mine first. I am Sir Terryn, Commander of the Thornbred Knights. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

He smiled, and nearly offered a hand to shake before thinking better of it. These were the sort to stab you as they greeted you, after all. "I've a job which may interest you. In fact, I think it may benefit you greatly."

The Gilded Lily's Associate...
"I understand that you are associated with...a...brothel?" Terryn half-guessed after the introductions had been made, arching an eyebrow. "My men and I have had dealings with the Lord of Polca in the past, and we no doubt will in the future. There's a job which we left quite incomplete, but I think it will interest you...should I succeed, you will benefit as well, no doubt."

-To Both: Terryn introduces himself as commander of the Thornbred Knights, and a Hedge Knight. He implies that he has a task at hand he would like to enlist the group's help with, but he does not outright explain his plan. He also adds that, should he succeed, the other people will benefit from having aided him (and will benefit in some small way even if they don't). Meanwhile, he fishes for information (re. who they are, what they do, any allies or enemies they may have) as much as possible while avoiding revealing information about his own plan or goals.

-Sometime later: Terryn and his men go bar-hopping, searching for information on this rumored spellcaster.

[56514] Both parties are receptive to any plans that make them profit of any kind and are willing to work with you, they do require some information as to what your plans might be, however. You manage a fair bit of the basic information about the groups. The Head of the Gilded Lilly is not in any rush to do anything to jeopardize her current situation with Polcan leadership. The gang remnants are all too eager to the point of nearly fault to stick one to the current Lord.

[366] Rumors they are, none of your men are fooled by the stories - which range from it all being a hoax to the manifestation of a demon that sucked the life from everyone in the room. You're sure he's still in town however at people claim to still see him, but given the variance to their stories and descriptions you also think they might just be crazy.

Meet the generals at the place they chose, bring Adrian and two more guards

[2]You meet the generals a fair distance from your palace, but there is no evidence of troops in the immediate vicinity. They each have 3 bodyguards and do not seem friendly.
One of them speaks up "Alright. So I know you use words like I use weapons. What -really- went down that day? Cause i'm not buying a coup."

Kathos sighed. That was a bad beginning for the meeting. Atleast, the generals underestimated him - Kathos was probably a better swordsman than these two. If this turned into a fight, he might be able to get out of it alive if they thought they were dealing with a mere politician.

"Let's keep things simple, then. Nikephoros wanted me as a pawn ever since Laythe's fall. He gave me power over the kingdom's economy, but he knew that since the marine, the army, the justice and the intelligence were all in his hands I had no actual power that I could use against him. He even tried to corrupt my personnal guard very recently, when our relations started to grow... Cold. Things started to degrade, however, when he started speaking about invading Mileth.

Nikephoros had no acceptable reason to invade Mileth - we had another campaign going on, plenty of free territories that we could take if we lacked ressources, and our income was extremely high, even after the recruitment of new regiments. He only wanted to take the city because Mileth had wounded his ego - he would say things like 'Laythe stole my victory'. I found that inacceptable, firstly because of the waste of time and ressources that this invasion would mean, and secondly because Nikephoros did not want to investigate Mileth to see if its defences or armed forces had changed since last summer, which is a very logical thing to do after the invasion they suffered.

I decided that I would, for once, use the power I had been given against him - I said that I would not allow him to recruit any more regiments for his foolish campaigns, and that if need be I would order the treasury to no longer pay the upkeep of most of his forces, to stop his dreams of war. Let's just say he didn't like that.

At that time, Nikephoros assumed that my personnal guard was in his hand, and we were surrounded by them. I suppose he thought that he could easily kill me there, while I was at his mercy. I also think Nikephoros never saw me in a swordfight, which made him assume that I probably didn't know how to use the sword that I carry around and that he could put me down without too much trouble. He pulled out his firearm to finish this in one hit, but one of my guards saved me from the shot. The rest of my men fled - they had never heard or seen a firearm in their entire life - and Nikephoros drew out a dagger. He was a good fighter, of course, and he had the effect of surprise, but I have yet to meet a man able to match me when I wield the Thunderblade. Nikephoros learned that, and he died."

Kathos sighed. That might give them something to think about.

"I don't think he wanted to get all the power for himself - he was never good with numbers. I believe his plan was to kill me, put the blame on my guard or one of Laythe's assassins or something, and then place a new pawn in my place - hopefully someone more manipulable than I was."

[Charisma] Convince the generals that Nikephoros tried to assassinate Kathos to place a new pawn in the position of Lord Chancellor, because Kathos would not allow him to go to war.

Plan was flawless, execution less so. But at least he did not have to go hungry today. No doubt the news of his exploits are already out and about, but hopefully no one would identify him. Because reall,y who would associate magic with a poor sod like Gav?

The house key could be valuable, depending what the man had there. Or it could be his demise, if his relatives were there. Either way he did not feel like a burglar, but the key could be traded in for some coin to someone who was into that sort of thing.

It was time for another trick then. He did the seer thing, he did the healer thing. He got out some coin from it, but never enough to satisfy him, and the magic scared more people off than brought in more clients. Th rumours of the plague south of here, his "accident" and the relatively miserable condition of the place did give him an idea. It was time to see if the prophet Aurelius would gain popularity with the townsfolk.

Later next day...
He used the last of the money to get himself a big breakfast in an inn in the upper part of the town, where he also spent the night. If he was to do this thing, he would need all the strength and wits that he had.
Going to a city plaza and setting up the crate to which he could stand on was the easy part. Talking was the hard part. He cleared his throat and begun.

"Oh ye of little faith and little sight, that wonder in to the darkness unaided! Oh children of man, how easily do you surrender yourself to the vices and sin!
But your sins do not go unpunished! The terrible horror from the south is not a mere myth! Nay, it is a manifestation of the evil that you harbour in your hearts!
The sorceror that invaded one othe taverns is but a single manifestatoin of the evil that found its lair in this fair city!
And know that the wicked cower in fear as the judgement draws nearer. The end of days is upon them, and the final hour draws near!

But know this!I have been given the foresight, and power to bring about the salvation! Know that your sins will be absolved and your lives saved if you put your faith in me!
I am but the servant of a higher power, but I see what no man was allowed to witness, and I heard what no man was allowed to hear! There is salvation in these words, and if you heed the advice, your souls may yet be spared..."

Preach to the townsfolk. Tell the eager ones to gather outside the town gate at dusk so that he may speak to them more privately and direclty in the wood nearby.

"Fine with me — should I go right now?

"Yes, probably. But tell me something, why did you come to Polca of all places?"

Center Plaza.

Hullo, whats this...
"Hello there. I have a few questions to ask, lad, if I may?"
William appears from the crowd with a detail of Crimson Guards. He's smirking at the so called prophet, and looks very interested, in what he has to say.

Lord's Manor, Laythe's Quarters
"May I speak with Laythe? It's rather important."

"Long story short, I made a mistake near the merchant city. I went to the closest nation that wasn't bordering Venir... Which way should I go for the test?"

Eurika waited for William to show her the way.

Town Plaza
"Huh? What do you want?"

"Well, lad, I want to know what qualifies you to be a prophet? I mean your clean shaven, and not even approaching fifty. And you've said you seen things no man is allowed to witness, but haven't we all? It's quite a common occurrence, round the Storm Coast...and to tell you the truth, you smell a bit like you've been hitting the bottle, which holymen shouldn't do frequently."

Laythe's Quarters.
"We need to talk about what assets you posses back in Ligoria. I'll need help and resources if I am to usurp Kathos."

Lord's Mansion Courtyard
He gestured for Eurika to follow, and led her out into the rather sparse courtyard of William's manor.
A girl with shortcropped black hair, wearing the same uniform as the other Guards around the place, stands at attention. She's holding a short sword and shield,  and nods her head to William.
"Well this is Lizzy. She'll be your sparring partner. Tell her when you wish to start."
