Steel battle axe. Blunt weapons such as war hammers aren't any better in steel, the only thing that matters is density, which silver wins out on.

Is one that is really expensive, studded with adamantine spikes and has so many kills it gets a historical entry.

Ty, time to load until it comes as a battle axe.

however, there is not any exotic weapon that is plain better? AFAIK artifacts might come as long swords or whips or stuff

In testing on the adventure mode forum, even iron morningstars beat adamantine swords in npc vs. npc combat (and hence very likely also axes, considering both are slicing weapons). I would assume steel morningstar is one of the top weapons in the game, at least it rips bronze colossi apart.

Whips and daggers are the traditional imbalanced weapons. Both have an absurdly small contact surface. However, only the dagger will benefit from being steel, since whip attack type is blunt.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

Steel is actually very good for blunt weapons, being one of the hardest materials in the game (but not nearly as light as adamantine). Compared with silver; one is best at penetrating armor, and the other is best at breaking bones where armor is of no concern. I forget which is which.

an artifact steel warhammer is very very useful and will be very effective at maiming and killing enemies.

While that may be true, can't get a morningstar, whip, or dagger artifact.

Is that so? I do believe I've seen bow and blowgun artifacts before. Perhaps it has something to do with the dwarf's interests (I know that if your dwarf likes something, you won't be able to savescum him into building anything else).

I've gotten exotic moods before, plenty of times.  I cultivate moods hoping for that one platinum whip that will take one swipe and lay waste to an entire civilization.  Ah, one can dream...

I'd have to vote spear myself.  Axes are nice, but spears take down the big enemies like dragons, titans, HFS, etc.  Bleeding deaths will be common with spears, and be a very powerful way to take down an otherwise massive enemy.  Although in the end, a training sword in the hands of a legend will rip a siege apart.  Stick your artifact in good hands and it's all the same level of "no longer a threat".

You can get bows and blowguns, but not exotic melees.

Unmodded?  Are you sure?  That weren't bows or blowguns?  With a bazillion artifacts, I have never once in this unmodded game seen, nor even heard of, an exotic melee mood.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.

I prefer artifact spears over axes. Spearlords have a tendancy to hack more limbs off than their axelord counterparts ;o

One has to be careful with arena testing of weapon vs. weapon, because armor type can make a huge difference. Weapon A might kick ass against weapon B when the combatants are fully encased in steel, but not do nearly as well when both combatants are in typical goblin armor. That's bronze or iron mail shirt or breastplate, helm and shield, but no armor on the limbs. Hammers vs axes are a good example. Hammers will do better than axes against opponents who are fully encased in good armor, because hammers will do more damage through armor. But the axes are oh so good at lopping off unarmored limbs, which tends to end a fight pretty quickly. Horses for courses.

That's not to say that arena mode testing isn't worth doing. You just have to do it throughly and take a good look at the details. Just saying "iron morningstars beat adamantine swords in npc vs. npc combat" doesn't tell the whole story.

To the OP, it all really depends on what you're having problems with. If FBs and Titans are of concern, try to get a spear, but if sieges are upon you, a good steel axe will hit home often and will slice through their armor and flesh like butter.
