While in a constant state of incremental releases (ala Dwarf Fortress) "Master of Mana" is the latest craziest FFH incarnation out there.  It's FFH pushed towards the classic Master of Magic mechanics.  I typically hate high fantasy too, but it's a definite must play in terms of seeing how much the mechanics have been altered and expanded.  http://masterofmana.com/

I kinda dig "Rise of Mankind," but inevitably I always hit a game-stopping bug 5 to 10 hours in, and alot of the new content just feels like bloat after awhile.  It's a perfect illustration of the golden paradox of modding: more content does not necessarily equal a better game.

For my precious gaming hours, Rise and Fall of Civilization (RFC) is where it's at.  An early build shipped with the game, but a finished build has been out for years now.  (OMG, a finished mod!?!)  The main feature is that there's lot's a tweaks and mechanics that keep the world and gameplay roughly adherent to real-world geopolitics.  It's amazing to see a great power such as the Ottoman Empire get clobbered in a war, and then suddenly splinter into Egyptians and Babylonians.  The whole rise, fall, and re-emergence of civilizations keeps the gameplay from turning into the great big micromanaged game of Risk that late game Vanilla feels like.  http://rhye.civfanatics.net/pages/civ4-RFC-description.php

What's changed since the "game release" version?

Also, FFH fans, what's different between the "game release" FFH and the most recent one?  I tried the release one and couldn't get into it.

HMR stands for Hazardous Materials Requisition, not Horrible Massive Ruination, though I can understand how one could get confused.

The FFH in BTS is kind of a "prologue", whereas FFH2 is the best freaking mod ever, complete with sending giant war vehicles to kill dragons. And a fun little card game. And summoning the forces of hell and then playing as them, and then killing the nearest civilization to test your demonic strength.

You're seriously missing out by not trying FFH2.

FFH2 is not only the best Civ 4 mod I have ever played, but I would even go so far as to say it is the best strategy game I have ever played, period.

I loved FFH2. For me, Crusader Kings II pretty much beats it into the dust and then does obscene things to its lifeless corpse, though.

I think it's just that so many of the good civ 4 mods are based on fall from heaven. The reason is that it's just THAT GOOD. Seriously try that shit.

I did a brief Let's Play of FFH2, and tried to explain some of the game mechanics while so doing, if you want to see them. Got some videos of it from my Livestream too... but I might need to refresh those before they're visible again.

Of course, these games are more fun to play then they are to read about. Also, FFH2 isn't about being "A Fantasy Mod"... it's about improving and expanding gameplay in new ways, and polishing the design of Civ IV. "Fantasy" is just the coat of paint it wears. I'd highly suggest trying it out, genre be damned. I was uninterested in it when I heard about it, but now I kick myself for waiting 2 years to try it out.

I played both and I seriously don't see they way to compare these. It's like apples and oranges. If abbout addiction - I still get cravings for ffh2 after so many years, but I stopped playing CK2 after couple of weeks, because I think it's still unfinished.

There you go.

If the comparison had been 'best dynasty role-playing strategy' or 'best civilization-building strategy', then no, I wouldn't be comparing the two.

I don't think there's a need to derail the thread further, though - it was really just a passing comment on my part. They're both awesome games, and I loved the heck out of FFH2. It's still one of my favorites, even though I don't play it much anymore.

I have to second Master of Mana.    With the latest patch it's gotten to the point that it could be passed off as an entirely new game.
