Yes, it will make them happier to have their own stuff to admire, IIRC.

They care a lot. A dormitory should be the last resort if you donīt have enough rooms for the last migrant wave and donīt want them to sleep on the floor. Having a nice room and some furniture will also let your dwarves recover from tragedies much faster.

If a civilian gets their own room, the furniture belongs to them and I'm pretty sure that improves thoughts they get from admiring it. Owning their own cabinet/chest also means they can store their clothing and stuff in there (although with the strange behaviors of clothing these days, who knows if this is relevant). But of course there's also the threat of vampires sneaking up on your dwarves unawares, and if your civilians' rooms are separated by walls then probably nobody will catch the vampire in the act. This is less likely to happen if you cram your dwarves into a dorm where nobody gets any privacy.

I think glass/gem windows are much better for that. Fortifications donīt add to the roomīs value, while with a window connecting two bedrooms you get the neighbor watch effect and also improve two rooms with one single item.

I give everybody 1 rock coffer and 1 rock cabinet, if only to get rid of all the stone. And guys I like get a private dining room with chair and table, even if they donīt need it for their position. Also helps a lot if you burrow your legendary workers in a small workshop + living quarters cluster.

Do family people need to be in the same room or is that ok?

They don't need to be in the same room. Married couples will automatically share one room as well

They don't care that much. Accumulating happy thoughts when they walk into their rooms and see their nice furniture can help, but if they don't have their own room then it's only a very minor negative thought that they get (so long as they have a bed somewhere to sleep on and they're not sleeping in the dirt). Things like mist generators and legendary dining rooms will quite easily keep all your dwarves' moods high so bedrooms are rarely something that should be considered a remotely high priority :)

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Trivial point of clarification:  It is a "coffer", with an "r".
