Happy Miners
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:13:07 pm »

I just breached an aquifer by plug-drop. I did it wrong and one idiot fell. He was standing over the pool of water, idiot was supposed to be channeling out from a diagonal, but of course not. Anyway the cave in dust blew him onto the ledge and he survived uninjured, hehe. Some water was teleported to the top of the plug and there were 1/7 squares of water there when I had the miners dig down. This water keeps falling on the miners as they tunnel down, generating mist. They are all quite happy now, even the guy caught in the cave in, 'comforted by a lovely waterfall' aka the muddy sludge from the cave in that keeps falling on their heads.

For how long will their state of delusion last?

Are there harmful side effects?

Will the aquifer breach ever food?

Find out next time, in the inkblots of gears!

of course they're happy, the top things dwarves love are dirt, magma, waterfalls, and socks. You just combined waterfalls with dirt, so they're absolutely loving it. Now if you could make the mist into the shape of socks and have the floor made of glass with lava underneath, the happiness centers of their little brains would just explode, shattering the skull and tearing the brain.

I should mention miners will never do anything from a diagonal, or any type of construction, also dwarves tend to prefer building/digging from the top, left, right, bottom. So if the tile above something is available they will stand there first, etc. You can prevent losing miners to cave-ins by selectively choosing the order they dig out to prevent anyone standing on a tile that will be dropped.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Constructions are orthogonal, but they will most certainly mine diagonally, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're talking about.

then, i stand corrected. Not something i had noticed as a preference, but yeah i should have remembered all the diagonal passages i have constructed.

And cave in dust, like miasma, won't travel through diagonals, so if you are like me and don't plan ahead, you can still (theoretically in my case) breach an aquifer without mechanisms and without sacrificing a dwarf. My problem was thinking a suspended construction would keep a dwarf from mining from that spot. It won't, it just keeps them from constructing from there.
